For anyone actively applying or anyone who has applied to college, the phrase "you are more than a test score" is quite familiar. Is this really true though?
I believe it is very hard to make this mentality a reality in this day and age. However, with a few tips and tricks I have picked up as I navigate the college process, you can do just that.
1. Consider "Test Optional" schools - These schools are publicly declaring their desire for more personal application by considering students with or without a test score. A full list here.
2. Make your Common App essay meaningful - This is your shot at showing off an aspect, talent, interest, or experience that has shaped and describes you. Avoid topics that might be obvious given your transcript like "a love for math" when you have great grades and test high in math.
3. Activities tell the story - Include every activity you can think of. If it doesn't fit, there is usually a spot to add "additional information," including in the Common App.
4. Don't be humble - Brag. Be cocky. Be obnoxious about your accomplishments because you can be.
5. Take advantage of supplementary essays - Choose topics completely different from other essays or interests already listed. With every essay submitted, readers should learn at least one more thing about you as a person.
6. Do the "optional" - Although it might be time consuming and difficult, I encourage you to do the the "optional" essays. These are colleges giving you another chance to brag about yourself and prove your character beyond what test scores and grades might reveal.
Lastly, you've got this.
With love,
a fellow high school senior applying to college.
