Ten Upcoming Horror Films In 2016

One of my absolute favorite pastimes is going to the movies and better yet, getting the pants scared off of me in the process! While I was growing up, scary movies and haunted houses were always something my dad and I would do together. Since then, I've developed a strange and probably a little bit of sick enjoyment out of seeing my most terrifying nightmares come to life. What can I say—he taught me well! Now we try and find whatever twisted, horrifying adrenaline rush we get to look forward to in the coming year. These are some of the scariest we could find!

1. The Abandoned

A woman desperate to get her life back together takes the graveyard shift as a security guard to a now abandoned apartment complex. Already on edge from her troubled past, she begins feeling a presence lurking in the deepest depths of this dark building. While facing demons both present and from her past, she must conquer what has become imagined and very, very real.

2. The Forrest

I know we have all heard about this movie recently, and it looks intensely promising. At the foot of Mount Fuji it is rumored to be a very real woodland known as the "Suicide Forest," and when her twin sister goes missing into these very woods, Sara is determined to find her. Traveling to Japan in hopes of finding her, Sara is warned of the legend and seriousness of these woods, however her connection to her sister is too strong to allow her to abandon her mission. She is warned to stay on the path, no matter what, but in her determination veers off and in doing so making herself prey for the dark spirits that linger in the woods. While on her mission to save her sister, she will have to discover how to save herself.

3. The Boy

Offered a job as a nanny in the United Kingdom, American girl, Greta, is shocked to discover her ward is not alive by any means; he's a doll. The parents leave her with a strict set of rules for taking care of their oddly peculiar son that they use to help them cope with the death of their actual son by the same name. Greta, thinking this is no more than a silly game, does not abide by these rules, and the boy seems to become disturbingly alive.

4. The Witch

In early New England, when suspicion and anxieties ran rampant, a devout Christian family's world is mysteriously shaken when they are driven from their Colonial plantation for a plot of land much more rural. Shortly upon arrival, their youngest son of five children disappears into the woods and their crops fail. This story hits on the family's greatest fears that come to life and may be superstition or perhaps is something far more sinister lurking in the wood.

5. Backtrack

In this chilling horror, a psychotherapist is plagued by nightmares and eerie visions. Upon discovering a link between several of his patients, he is forced back to the hometown he once fled. He is thrust into solving a 10-year-old mystery while facing the demons of his own past.

6. Rings

We've all seen the previous "Ring" movies before, however this follows a time before Samara's terror began and how she came to be in the first place.

7. The Conjuring 2

While the exact plot of this movie is still unknown, it still revolves around the real-life events that couple Ed and Lorraine Warren willingly faced in order to help those plagued by malevolent forces unseen.

8. A Monster Calls

This movie based off the novel by Patrick Ness, who used the original ideas from Siobhan Dowd. It follows a young boy who is unable to deal with the consequences of his mother's terminal cancer and is visited by a monster every night that tells him stories. Dowd herself was diagnosed with cancer and passed before its completion.

9. The Strangers 2

"The Strangers" had to be one of the most disturbing movies I've seen, leaving the viewer with a eerie awful sense, so I can only imagine with this one will do. The plot is said to follow a family of four that is forced out of their home due to financial reasons and is paid a visit from the blood-thirsty family of three. This family, in the first movie tortured and killed for the sheer pleasure, and we can't wait to see who will make it out alive in this one.

10. Amityville: The Awakening

This movie, centered around a legendary truth, revolves around a young Belle, her sister and their comatose brother. They are plucked from their childhood home and forced to move into a new home in order to save money for their brother's continued treatment. After strange noises and occurrences begin taking place, Belle suspects her mother isn't telling her all she can about this house, especially the fact that it's in the infamous Amityville horror home.

Hope these get you as excited for the upcoming year as it does us! See you at the movies!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
