If you’ve never watched "Gilmore Girls," you need to! It’s a story about a single mother, Lorelai Gilmore, and her daughter, Rory, who are more like best friends than mother and daughter. The show is jam-packed with life lessons for just about everyone, and here are a few of the things that I have taken away from it.
1. A true best friend will ALWAYS have your back.
Whether it’s Lane, Kim or Sookie St. James, a best friendship is hard to come by. Whoever they are, they should not only be the first person to let you know when you look trashy or there’s food in your teeth, but also always be there to pick you up when you fall.
2. Having a relationship with your mother is important.
Lorelai and Rory demonstrate a very special mother-daughter bond. However, Lorelai and her mother don’t have the same close and loving relationship. Either way, it’s easy to see that having a mother figure in your life is something that is irreplaceable. if you are lucky enough to have someone like that, remember how fortunate you are to have them!
3. You don't always have to know where you're going.
Rory had a little speed bump in her college career, because she needed to figure a few things out. If you are unsure about something or feel like you are on a road headed nowhere, that’s OK. Take a step back, and don’t put so much pressure on yourself. It’s okay to not have a plan all the time.
4. There has to be compromise for a relationship to
work.
Lorelai had so many failed relationships, and through watching with my own mother, I learned a little bit about why. Compromise is something that is necessary for any relationship to work. Lorelai was slightly selfish and unwilling to compromise and that’s why so many of her relationships ended how they did.
5. You NEVER have to settle.
Some of Lorelai’s relationships also didn’t work out simply because she didn’t think that they were the right person. Rory turned down her proposal from longtime boyfriend Logan because she wanted to pursue her career. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t settle.
6. Always follow your dreams.
Lane Kim, Rory’s BFF was daughter to a strict Korean mother, but her true passion was rock music. Although her mother didn’t approve, she went after her dreams anyway. Even though some people may not approve of the dreams that you have, follow them anyway and you are sure to find happiness.
7. You don't have to fit in to be happy.
Rory, a quiet bookworm, didn’t quite fit in at her upper class private school, and some people thought that was unacceptable. When they pushed her too hard to find more friends, she got into trouble. You don’t have to follow the crowd to be happy.
8. Some things just aren't worth the fight.
Lorelai and her mother were always butting heads. After awhile, Lorelai decided that most things just really aren’t worth the fight, especially when it’s something silly. It gets tiring to argue about everything, so sometimes it’s alright to just give up and let the other person win once in a while.
9. It's OK to ask for help.
Lorelai is an extremely stubborn woman who hates asking for help, however when Rory needs to get into a good private school, Lorelai sees no other way to afford her daughter’s future but to ask for help from her parents. Don’t be stubborn; it’s alright to ask for help when you really need it.
10. Hard work does pay off in the end.
You may be like Rory and working hard to get into a good school or like Lorelai and trying to start your own business. Either way, dedication and hard work always pay off in the end, so just keep going and it will all be worth it.
