If you have ever had the joys of serving at a busy restaurant on a Saturday night, you understand that this is not a job for the faint of heart. Constant yelling of "check", and multiple people complaining about their food taking more than 10 minutes. Every server has had a few weak spots, and these are just a few examples.
1. You have been the chef at one point or another.
Whether its making your own eggs on an early Monday morning shift, or whipping up the garlic bread your table ordered 12 minutes ago but never got because some other server stole it for their table, you definitely have had to be a make-shift cook every now and again.
2. Cheated on side work..... just a little.
Whether it's taking silverware that's already been polished and rolled, or hiding racks of glassware so you don't have to put them away, we all have skipped out a little on side work once or twice.
3. Stolen food off a plate in the window.
You don't run the plate, no no, you just steal a french fry or two while chef isn't looking. The customer won't even notice, and now you have the fuel to survive the next four hours!
4. Went home with a lot of money.
We have all had the night of all nights and walked out with $200 dollars on a Tuesday.
5. Went home with no money whatsoever.
These nights go something like this. First table leaves no tip, but leaves a nice note. Second table is twp teenagers who order just an appetizer and waters and think that $1 on a $15 bill is fair! Then you are cut for the evening and need to cheat on your, I mean do your side work.
6. Hid in the freezer for just a moment on Saturday night.
Saturday, or whatever is your busy night of the week is, is always stressful and crazy. There are never enough cooks, or plates, or cups, and mid shift after the host has sat you for the fourth time in three minutes, you go into the freezer to grab creamer or milk, and you stop for a second and seriously contemplate starting a new life in this nice cold safe space.
7. Gone to another restaurant and judged your servers every action.
Maybe it was not greeting you for the first 15 minutes, or never getting you a refill on your soda, or being so perfect you hate/love the ground they walk on, but you will admit you noticed every single action of your server.
8. Felt like you didn't tip enough.
So you order pizza and tip the delivery guy 50%, or you go to eat a few $2 tacos and end up leaving a 100 percent tip, it doesn't matter. A part of you will always hesitate and wonder if you ripped that individual off and for a brief moment you will feel guilty and want to leave another $30 or $40 even thought you now don't have rent, because what was suppose to be a $15 meal with friends turned into a $220 five course meal.
9. Purchased at least 10 pair of work shoes.
For whatever reason, your work shoes don't even last as long as a Kardashian marriage. Even though you swore you just bought them, they somehow now have holes in the sole and have rips at the tongue that make your toes pop out every time you step forward.
10. Felt like the coolest person in the world.
The moment when your table leaves an extra $100 on top of the 18% gratuity, or when a little girl or boy writes you a note to say thank you, you can't help but feel like the greatest person to ever live. But then someone screams about never getting a straw, and that feeling of euphoria is gone.
