The word "adult" is no longer used as a noun in today's society. Millennials have transformed the word into a verb. For those of you who may not be up to date on what "adulting" is, here is the definition, according to Urban Dictionary:
Adulting (v): to do grown up things and hold responsibilities such as, a 9-5 job, a mortgage/rent, a car payment, or anything else that makes one think of grown ups.
Used in a sentence: Chelsea is adulting quite well today since she did her laundry and cooked herself dinner.
Here is a list of ten reasons why adulting is seriously one of the worst things ever.
10. The Anticipation Of Pay Day Is Overwhelming
Living pay check to pay check becomes exhausting. You need to figure out your budget for everything you need and want to do within the next couple weeks until your next pay check hits your bank account.
9. You No Longer Can Spend Money On Whatever You Want
There were plenty of times when your parents gave you the "Money doesn't grow on trees" speech. Once you started having a few dollars, yourself, you could use it for what you wanted. As an adult however, there are more important things that need to be bought rather than the things you want but do not need. This is a sad realization.
8. The Moment You Realize Your Collection Of Beanie Babies Is Worth Nothing
I cannot tell you how many times I heard that if you did not rip the Ty tag off your beanie babies, they would be worth money. Wrong. So wrong. I have six or seven HUGE boxes of beanie babies and they are not worth a single thing. I am so disappointed. I expected that money. I need that money. Adults function with money.
7. You Can't Nap To Avoid Responsibilities
There were plenty of times when my parents had yard work to do or any sort of chores around the house, I would pretend to be napping so that I was not responsible for getting anything done. (Sorry mom. Sorry dad.) But this can no longer happen as an adult. Even if you avoid your responsibilities, they will still be there when you wake up because there is no one to do it for you.
6. You're Expected To Make Educated Decisions
This pretty much means for everything you do, you should highly consider the consequences of your actions and be fully informed before making your decision. This is crazy. Where are my parents to make all these life decisions for me?
5. Finding And Applying For Jobs
Currently in the situation where college is about to end and I am scrambling to figure out what I want to do with my life right after I am done with school. I have applied for seven jobs in the past two weeks. If that isn't adulting, I don't know what is.
4. Paying Bills Is Actual Torture
I just recently started paying my own cell phone bill and let me tell you... WHAT WAS I THINKING? It sucks to fork out $80 a month for a phone plan. I wish it was still socially acceptable to use a flip phone without a data plan.
3. Your Parents No Longer Can Just Call You Downstairs When Dinner Is Ready
This is it. You have to start cooking for yourself and it cannot continue to be pizza rolls and bagel bites. Your mom and dad are not going to come to your house every night and cook you steak and potatoes. Get a cook book and begin your journey as a master chef.
2. Making Your Own Doctors Appointments
I have not gone to a doctor in about a year because I have avoided making my own appointments. I tend to look my symptoms up on Web MD (because that's the adult thing to do) and hope I am not dying.
and finally the number one thing that is the worst about adulting....
1. Everyone Expects You To Have Your Life Together
The thing is... I am only 22 years old. Who knows what I want to do with my life. I certainly do not. I get the question all the time "What are you doing after college?" I can barely get myself out of bed in the morning. Do you think I have my life together?
So you see, adulting is something no one wants to do. I cannot believe I ever said "I can't wait to be an adult because I will be able to do whatever I want!" If only that was true...
