When it’s a biting cold blizzard outside and all that is getting you through that dreadful 8 a.m. class is a large coffee, the winter blues settle in and motivation is at an all time low. Each minute you’re out in the snow, you long for your cozy bed and a cup of cocoa, and put school on pause. Well, here is a list of ten movies for the perfect movie night, cold afternoon, and break from reality. Grab your blanket and put on your sweatpants, it’s movie time.
1. "A League of Their Own"
Classic girl power movie. Perfect for your Wednesday pizza and wine nights. Guaranteed to make you proud to be an American woman, and want to do your hair in pin curls and wear red lipstick.
2. "How to Marry a Millionaire"
A little classic Marilyn Monroe is just what you need on a cold wintery afternoon. Cuddle up with some cocoa and dream of wearing the ski fashions and elegant ball gowns and finding your own millionaire.
3. "Clueless"
Hands down the best movie of the '90s. Girls night classic. Pair with popcorn and a Fred Segal blouse and you are like totally down for rollin with the homies on a cold Friday night. Plus did you know this movie was based on Jane Austen's "Emma"? So this is studying. Definitely keep telling yourself that.
4. "Pride and Prejudice"
Sometimes you just need a good Jane Austen story to get you through the blistering cold. Plus Keira Knightley is a goddess as Lizzie Bennet. Red wine and cozy pajamas go well with this one.
5. "Changeling"
A little drama, a little mystery, a lot of Angelina Jolie in beautiful 1920s costumes. This movie is your Sunday night special, and has enough suspense to last you until your next movie night. Government coverups, CIA secrets...this movie has all your conspiracy theory guilty pleasure.
6. "The DaVinci Code"
When you need a little suspense and thrill in your regular movie night. Tom Hanks plays the genius Robert Langdon and runs around the Louvre putting together an ancient mystery that threatens the Catholic church. Be prepared for surprises and lots of chase scenes.
7. "House of Cards"
Not a movie, but who can resist Kevin Spacey’s smooth voice, and Frank Underwood’s cool and cunning character? And the new season comes back soon, so what better way to prepare than binge watching all the episodes?
8. "Silver Linings Playbook"
The ever amazing J-Law and Bradley Cooper come together again and make another incredible movie. Guaranteed to make you a little misty-eyed, this movie is perfect for a little pick me up Netflix sesh. It also really makes you want to dance just like them the next time you go out.
9. "50 First Dates"
A nice feel-good comedy, and probably the best Adam Sandler rom-com there is. Watch when you need to laugh away winter blues.
10. "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl"
My favorite movie in the series. Keira Knightley again, as the beautiful and headstrong Elizabeth Swan, dreamy Orlando Bloom, and Johnny Depp as the iconic Captain Jack. The first movie of a series is often the best, and watching this will make you nostalgic for those youthful years when the movies were just coming out into theaters.
