Ten Lessons Learned After High School

Oh, High school, how I have not missed you. This days of drama and heartbreaks i thought I'd never recover from. Being a girl at this age can be very brutal because teenage girls can be the worst! There are some lessons I learned from this time in my life, and I thought I'd share them.

1. Popularity does not matter

Yes of course during out teen years we think that having all these friends and being 'popular' is the most important thing at the time. Honestly, who cares if you won prom queen/king these things do not follow you after graduation.

2. Your parents had your best interest in mind

As hard as it may be to admit mom and dad (or whatever your family structure is) were probably right and only looking out for you. Be thankful for all they did for you and anytime they said no. Specifically I remember my freshman year I wanted to go to a party and my parents wouldn't let me go. I was so upset because most of my class went and i had to stay home. I find out the party got busted and so many people got in trouble. Sometimes parents have an intuition that we cannot understand yet.

3. Some people you may never see again after graduation

Yes, on graduation day this may be the last time you see these people. Everyone will go their separate ways and can lose touch. I came from a small town where not only did I know every single person in my class but I knew the entire school. It was crazy to think that we were all growing up and going to different cities and colleges and would start a new life.

4. 18 is young

Of course as soon as I turned 18 I thought it would be magical and I could do whatever I wanted. I was quickly reminded that I wasn't as much of an adult as I thought I was.

5. He wasn't worth it

The guy you thought was the love of your life was not worth the hurt. He wasn't worth the tears or the time. You will get over him and yes you will find someone else.

6. Make connections with your teachers

Once you're in college you will need some connections for references. Your former teachers are great resources for this and so much more.

7. Your grades won't matter after graduation

It doesn't matter if your grades were all A's or if you had some C's or D's on your report card. High school grades aren't as important as you think. I promise you will still get into your state university with a C on your report. Now, I don't mean you can completely not care, but it's OK if your grades aren't perfect.

8. It will go by fast

I know this is pretty cliche, but it's just so true. Until you are sitting in your chair on graduation day wondering how you got to this point it is hard to understand. Four years really will fly by.

9. It gets better

If high school wasn't the best time for you there is hope! The whole rest of your life is waiting and there are many opportunities waiting.

10. You will miss parts of it

No matter what there will be times when you think about high school. You'll think back on many memories and experiences you had both good and bad.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
