Tales Of A Temporary College Housewife

The tales of a period where I actually clean up after myself.

Tales Of A Temporary College Housewife

Over the past few weeks, I have been on a major cleaning spree. Anyone who knows me or has seen my room would know that this is a rare occasion. I feel bad for my roommate because she has to live in my pig pen. I say mine because I take up the majority of the room with my piles of stuff. Half the time my desk is covered in dirty dishes, my bed covered in Pop-tart crumbs, and the chair by my closet covered in clothes that I have no motivation to hang up.

Since returning to college after break, I have constantly been sick, first an everlasting cold and then an ear infection. I don’t know about anyone else, but when i’m sick I have motivation to be productive, and really like to clean things.

First I organized the cubby above my closet. Bye, Bye random things I never use. Christmas is over, so make sure to clear out all of the glittery garland and singing lights. After an hour of rearranging and consolidating, everything has a place. Plus I can actually see the back of it.

Then I kept up on my dishes. This task always bites me in the butt. Dirty mugs from Ramen and orange juice caked cups sit on my desk for weeks. Every few days this past week I took my dishes and washed them. Actually washed them. Before, I would just take a Lysol wipe and do my dishes that way, (which is great if you’re in a pinch, or just lazy). But this time, I washed them with nice smelling dish soap and a scrubbie. My roommate questions what my parents would say if they found out, so Sorry Mom!

I also did my laundry! After three weeks, I ran out of clean underwear and my leggings had seen two or three days each. So I thought it was time to pull out the detergent pods and make the trek to the basement to do my laundry. Of course, the dryer I ended up using was a little bit too tall for me and several of my socks ended up sticking in the back of the dryer. There I was jumping around trying to get the stupid socks out of there, all while a cute boy is next to me doing his laundry. Surprisingly I had the nerve to talk to him and ask him to help a struggling short person. Thank you, random tall boy! Then once it dried, I folded it and put it away. And I didn’t end up having a pile of clothes on my chair! I think my roommate was proud of me. Actually more like scared.

Baking is one of my hobbies, but coming to college you never know what to expect when it comes to baking facilities. The kitchen in my dorm is so sketchy. I’m scared to go down to do my laundry, so to stay down there and make food was a very trying task. But soon I had a nice fresh pan of warm brownies, and that made it all worth it. While I was down there, several boys were playing with a remote control car. So I think it’s safe to say that college students act like five year olds. But that's okay, it made me less afraid of the basement.

My adventures as a productive and clean college student will not last long. The temporary desire to diligently clean and bake is now gone. Maybe it will pick up in a month or two, most like the next time I get sick. This experience has been entertaining for me, and more so for my roommate. Just a tip for all you college kids, cleaning isn’t as scary as it seems.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
