I've been incredibly proud over the past year to get to help participate in telling the real story of UT Greek life. Because of The Odyssey, for the first time, its ups and downs are being chronicled, rather than just the seldom major incidents that occur.
The Odyssey is currently hiring writers and applying is easy at TheOdysseyOnline.com/Apply. Just select "Student Position" and then "Texas" for your school. The only requirement is that you're a UT student interested in telling the real story of UT Greeks. The Odyssey also works to cover other issues impacting Greek life, which range widely from campus events to national and international affairs.
No matter what your major is, being part of The Odyssey can be great for you.
You'll learn how journalism works.
Knowledge of how the media works, including how to effectively draw information from it, communicate with it and utilize it to your benefit, is very helpful for almost any field.
You'll get to sharpen your writing skills.
Again, no matter what field you're in, it's important to know how to write well. Working for The Odyssey forces you to consistently turn in content written in different ways, sharpening up your grammatical and literary skills.
You'll get to do something that matters.
In my opinion, no field can make a positive impact like journalism can. The press is an incredibly powerful thing, and by being part of The Odyssey you can tell stories that matter.
You'll get the building blocks for a career in journalism.
If you're interested in pursuing journalism professionally, it's vital to come out of college with at least some solid writing samples and a decent understanding of journalism basics. That's what you'll need to land a professional internship or entry-level job, and without it, entry into a journalism career can be tough.
You'll get a voice.
Being an Odyssey writer gives you a platform to express the issues that matter to you, allowing for them to be exposed to, heard by and considered by others. There just aren't many serious opportunities for that.
