Imagine a world where technology hasn't upgraded. What do you picture?
A cave man?
The Old West?
(Well, maybe only I would think of Clint Eastwood).
These are just a couple of examples I would think of when I imagine a world without my automated coffee maker turning on and phone in hand as soon as I wake up in the morning. Don't get me wrong, there isn't anything wrong with upgrades. The shiny mustang sitting out in the yard where your old Chevy rusted. The new boyfriend or girlfriend who is a thousand times better than your ex. However, there is one upgrade that teeters on the edge of my brain: the classroom.
I am completely supportive when it comes to having computers and fun new games to play that help children learn. Many websites have also been created to help students in their studies. Without these, most would likely struggle with comprehending and keeping up with the others. Learning is essential, and I believe knowledge is the most important attribute anyone could gain.
Though, this is the thing: I think we've strayed away from the intention to make students benefit from this new technology we've acquired. There are so many gadgets and gizmos becoming new additions, students aren't learning the skills neccessary to write or think on their own. What ever happened to writing with a pencil on a piece of paper? Or going over notes on a chalkboard? How come all of our literature and science books are being thrown out and replaced with a screen?
In my own experience, I've seen confused classrooms and lowered grades. It's been a struggle for teachers, as well, to keep up with our new-age additions. They don't know how to teach without a textbook. It just doesn't help clear things up when everyone is having problems logging in to the wifi or someone doesn't know how to do something on their computer. If anything, it just makes things more complicated. It slows the learning process.
Like I said, I completely agree with wanting to upgrade our educational system. However, there is one other question: How far is this going to be taken? The extremes?
I'm not saying that technology isn't useful. We've done miraculous things through technology. Cures to diseases and cancers are being researched. New inventions and ideas are being designed on a computer. Our world is advancing, but will our advancements ultimately become our downfall?
This is such a compelling topic, a controversial one at that. I'd like to know your thoughts.
Thank you for reading, and have a wonderful day!
