Most people know how to work a computer or cellphone, but most don’t know how to solder a phone together or write Java. I’m one of the many that fall into the first category, but technology is not something we can be complacent about anymore. 10 years ago we shouldn’t have been complacent either, but now more than ever technology is starting to inherit the location of objects and functions that we may not have expected it to. And though we don’t exactly know what role technology will take on in the future, the issues of ethics that have arisen are paramount for an industry as young as tech. As a political science student, I’m interested in the role that law can play in aiding the increased development of technology into daily life through inclusive, appropriate, and honorable ethics.
Certain technologies have begun questioning the foundations of basic human rights, bringing ethics into uncharted waters. So to begin to understand the ethical developments of technologies, once a month a new development will be posted so that a new discussion can begin. This will range from a Ted Talk to a product description, or even a scholarly article. The purpose of this is to become acquainted with developing technologies and the discussions around them, so the Odyssey reader can stay educated and involved.
This week please find Kevin Kelly’s Ted Talk, “How technology evolves”, to spark interest into the field of study. Kelly is a founding executive editor of Wired magazine. Though he is not an expert in technology, his perspective can give light to the way we may want to view technology and understand that it is not going to cease from societies.
