Teamwork: Key To Success

Starting a new job this past May, I was reluctant to become a member of a team. I am a shy, soft-spoken being for the most part. Why would I want to compromise my standing in society to join these strangers? Boy, was I wrong about my outlook. Teamwork is a necessity in our world. Being out in public is something that you cannot avoid. We have to learn how to deal with different people, pull together, and work as a team for the greater good of the world. I have learned something from everyone I have ever come in contact with and, being on a team, you learn how to really make your people stand out. When you are at work interacting with people and they can tell you are a team member, they will respect that. It is commendable to be a part of a unit.

To cultivate a team, all you need is loyalty, respect, and understanding. Sometimes people on a team will not get along very well, but they function because they play for the same team. Just because you do not like somebody does not mean you cannot work together with them. Teamwork makes for a real easy ride, especially in the work environment. From the jobs I have had, I could not have done any of them without a team. I also come to remember and respect the people I was on those work teams with. It is also a great way to spread a positive attitude with more of a force behind it. When dealing with a team, it is almost impossible to decimate or interrupt the force that you become. The possibilities are endless and unimaginable. Think of your immediate group of friends, now think of the talent that you can produce with them. Surrounding yourself with a better team will yield better results. Not only that, people that work as part of a team learn a lot about themselves. Sitting here writing, I can not come up with one time that being on a team will hold you back. Success is a team effort and if you strive to be the best, people will meet you there. Challenge yourself to prove me wrong.

I think of all my friends that served in a military unit and they all have cultivated a strong mental attitude. I think of bands like The Beatles and how their teamwork changed the world we live in. Being a part of a team is a reality for the new world we live in. People try to do things alone because they do not want to be ridiculed, but when the same people utilize a team effort, they could go all the way. Appreciate your sense of camaraderie and apply it to our world. Whether you would like to create something or change the way the world works, assemble your team.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
