Every professor you will meet in college has a unique teaching style, some better than others. Here are five of the different types of teachers I've had the pleasure, and the burden, of meeting during my time as a student (don't forget, though, that no matter what teacher you have to always be respectful and do your best--they are the ones giving you the grade at the end of the day):

1. The Grad Student

This teacher most likely looks just like me and you. Fresh faced and starry-eyed, these professors just graduated and probably were the ones who you saw drinking with their friends at the bar last Friday night. They’re definitely helpful when it comes to assignments and tests because they’re probably taking classes and are just as stressed out as you. Side note--they don't usually assign too much homework. 😊

2. The teacher who wrote all the textbooks (and is probably just as old as them)

Don’t be thrown off by the gray hair and bifocals, these professors not only know the text cover to cover but also know the answers to all of your questions. They are the kings and queens of the campus and have seen it all, so take advantage of their wisdom and pay attention to classes with teachers whose name is also printed on your textbook.

3. The lecturer

Did you just walk into an auditorium or another big room with over 100 people? You most likely have the professor who lectures, and only lectures. Don’t be too worried; most lecturers know exactly what to say and how to say it to get their point across in an hour or less. Taking good notes and paying attention will get you through classes like these.

4. The professor with the bad RateMyProfessors.com score

We all know who I’m talking about--all classes are mandatory, the textbooks are all over $200 and required, there’s no talking, no phones, and absolutely no help. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, they could be just misunderstood (think Snape). Toughness does create leaders, and success doesn’t come easy. Don’t take it too personally, face this challenge and you’ll come out on top, and with an A+. It doesn’t hurt to be a teacher’s pet sometimes too.

5. The diamond in the rough.

O' Captain, my Captain! It really puts a smile on my face, and on a teacher evaluation, when you find the professor that is a complete gem. Besides being ultimately caring, understanding and communicative, these teachers are great at their job and just as passionate about it too. It is just icing on the cake when there is leniency on attendance and never any pop quizzes. I am so personally thankful for all the professors that have made a positive impact on my academic career. Let them know how special they are!
