For starters, I would like to point out that I have never been a fan of Taylor Swift as a person. I’m not saying I won’t break out and sing if “Our Song” or “Wildest Dreams” comes on, but if I hear about who she’s dating, I will undoubtedly roll my eyes and make a snarky comment. It’s not that I have a problem with her dating lots of guy. You do you Tay-Tay, but what I have a problem with is her writing songs about them. All the things they’ve done wrong to her but on blast for the world to hear about. Real classy.
Recently, I was scrolling through Snapchat, and one of those little news feed sources came up with the title “The Complete History of Everyone Who's Had Bad Blood With Taylor Swift” and that’s when I realized that this whole Kanye “Famous” incident/reaction was incredibly hypocritical of her.
Here are the few lines that Taylor is mentioned in (lyric credit to azlyrics):
“I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why? I made that bitch famous, I made that bitch famous.”
Miss. Swift has written numerous songs about her ex’s, but I’ve chosen the one I feel is most brual- Dear John (lyrics also from azlyrics).
“Dear John, I see it all now it was wrong. Don’t you think 19 is too young to be played by your dark, twisted games? When I loved you so, I should have known”.
Did Taylor call John Mayer to ask for his permission to use him in a song? Where was his outrage when she basically called him a perverted psychopath on a quadruple platinum selling album? If you listen to all of Dear John and all of Famous, Dear John is kind of brutal. To be frank, I’d rather be called a bitch than a predator who feeds on the love and admiration of young people hopelessly in love with them.
Taylor Swift has built her million-dollar empire on writing about, and making villains of the boys and the people who she believes have wronged her: Katy Perry, Harry Styles, John Mayer, Jake Gyllenhaal, Drew, and a slew of other unnamed people. She never names names exactly, but it’s not exactly hard to guess as some songs are way less subtle than others.
A lot of people have come to her defense, same as a lot of people have come to Kanye’s; but I don’t think that they’re starting off on the same playing field. Kanye’s reputation is much worse than Taylor’s. We’ve heard all about Kanye’s anger and rudeness. We don’t hear a lot about the allegations that Taylor cheated on Connor Kennedy, or how she sues fans, or that she manipulates feminism to her advantage.
I’m not advocating for Kanye, but I am taking a stake in this and saying that Taylor might be in the wrong here. So as the events of this whole ordeal unfold, I implore everyone to keep an open mind, and we’re dealing with one person who knows very well how to appeal to the media, and another who is unapologetically themselves.
