Tattoos: Everything You Need to Know

As we move into a new socially accepting era, everyone is treated differently and accepts each other with open arms. Though we seem to accept the LGBT community, different races and ethnicities, and religious beliefs, we are still holding resentment with people that have tattoos. They are looked down upon, rejected from occupations, or judged based on the work of art.

Tattoos hold meanings to people that get them. They represent feelings, interests, symbols, etc. Though certain industries hold a certain image to their target audience, I believe they should take into consideration the meaning and adoration that tattoos hold. Tattoos are a work of art that can hold various meanings that can bring people together.

Considering to get a tattoo?

Here are some shows to watch:

Ink Master: Spike TV got more people to get tattooed and interested by creating this reality TV show. Although it may seem as though the drama, flash challenges, and critiques dominate the show, it is the work of art that is placed on the skin that takes time and dedication that pushes artists to think creatively and connect with the client.

Tattoo Nightmares: Also a Spike TV, this show teaches their audience what NOT to do or get when going to a tattoo shop. Although it seems funny that certain clients on the show have regrettable tattoos, this show teaches the audience the process of getting a cover-up and building a relationship with artists.

Miami Ink: Local clients go into the shop hoping to get a tattoo, cover-up, or touch-up. The process of getting a tattoo is clear and nothing on the show is staged. Audiences can visually see the process through consultations and the tattoo process.

Tips on Getting a Tattoo:

1. Know what you want.

The tattoo is on your body...forever. Don't get something you'll regret. Understand what your tattoo will mean to YOU because in the end, it's your body. It's YOUR choice.

2. Location, Location, Location.

Placement matters! It should flow with the body so it looks appealing. Your work profession may or may not allow tattoos (still working on the whole acceptance thing). Pick a location that can be easy to cover if your profession strictly restricts tattoos. Pain tolerance is also another location consideration. Everyone has a different pain tolerance to needles.

Here is a diagram that will help you consider placement:

3. Be open to new ideas from your artist.

Your artist understands what will look good on your body and fully takes into consideration your ideas or designs. Building a good relationship with your tattoo artist will give you a better understanding of your tattoo and put a lot of effort into your tattoo.

4. Know your budget!

Tattoo artists don't usually get paid by the hour. Also, supplies are very expensive along with rent, electricity, water, utilities, etc. It's a business, not a swap meet. Pricing is based on placement, size, color, and labor. Do not tell the artist what you are going to pay, rather give them a range to work with. Again, it's all about a good relationship and compromising.

5. Prepare the beforehand.

Do not drink alcohol the day before and on the day you get your tattoo. Alcohol thins out the blood and increases the pain of multiple needles piercing through the skin. Eat carbs before your appointment. Carbs give off energy and puts your body at a relaxed state causing the nerves in the brain to receive neurotransmitters slowly.

6. Breathe slowly and put your body at a relaxed state.

Or as they say, go to your happy place. Talk to your tattoo artist or bring along a friend that will help you stay calm.

7. Follow your artist's care instructions.

Tattoos take time to heal because your body is processing the ink. It takes about 3 weeks for a tattoo to heal. Apply unscented lotion twice a day and avoid scratching, scented lotions, direct sunlight and heavy rubbing. This may affect the outcome of the tattoo and may cause early fading of the ink over time, causing touch-up thus costs more money.

Need to cover your tattoo for jobs, family, or occasions?

Dermablend, makeup, or tattoo cover-up products should help.

What you'll have to deal with once you get tattoos:

Understand that people will judge you based on your tattoo. Who cares? It mesns you can take pain better than most people. It's a piece of art that you should be proud of.
