5 Times Talking To Your Professor Is A Good Thing

I swear, they don’t bite.

5 Times Talking To Your Professor Is A Good Thing
Kathryn McSherry

In the beginning of freshman year, I was terrified of going to my professors during their office hours. Sure, I had questions about the class and the information we were learning, but what if they thought that the questions I had were stupid? What if they had already answered my questions in class? What if I was just wasting their time?

Well as a more experienced second semester freshman, I now encourage everyone to go see their professors. The conversations I've had with my professors have given me a deeper understanding of their classes, and how their classes can be applied to my life.

Here is how to start talking to your professors.

1. Email in advance.

It’s polite to email your professors first, just to let them know that you are coming in for their office hours. Make sure to use proper etiquette and grammar when asking to meet with them.

2. No question is a stupid question.

Professors are here to help you better understand the class material. They would rather that you ask a question about something, then get it wrong in class or on an exam.

3. Professors want you to do well.

They are not there to purposefully fail you. They are here to help you. Don’t suffer in silence! Let your voice be heard.

4. Professors are people too!

Professors don’t actually sleep in their offices - they are real people with lives at home too! They are trying trying to do the best job that they can, just like their students.

5. Follow up with them.

Email your professor afterwards, so you can thank them for meeting with you and answering your questions.

There are many other benefits to meeting with your professors, but these are just a few to get you started.

Now get out there and go talk to those professors!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
