From the point of view of two dogs

A Tale Of Two Doggies

Trevor

I was sleeping in my bed and dreaming about chasing a nice, juicy squirrel. That would be the nicest Christmas dinner ever. Oh, I could almost taste it. So tender, so fresh, so-

BEEP BEEP BEEP.

The alarm went off, meaning my family was home. I sprang up from my bed to run to greet Dad, Mom, Casey and Lance. They probably smelled like the food they ate at the Christmas Eve party they were at. I wanted to smell them and lick them.

I ran down into the family room and was greeted by a yellow fluffball. This was Skye, a goldendoodle I had met and played with on Thanksgiving. She was just a puppy and was quite clumsy and not very intelligent. I sniffed her. She licked my face all over. I went back to my bed, and she followed me. I got up and walked away from her. She followed me again. I began to run around the house, thinking that she wouldn’t be able to keep up. Somehow, she managed, and she tried to climb on top of me.

“BARK,” I snarled at her. She backed off slightly, but not for long.

She came outside with me to do business before bedtime. I went outside through the doggie door, but she couldn’t figure out how to use it, and Dad had to open the door for her. Once we got back inside, I wanted to go to sleep, but this stuffed animal followed me to my bed again. Thankfully, someone took her and put her in her crate (HA, I remember those day), and I was able to fall asleep.

Why, oh why, was this dog staying with us? She was soooo annoying.

The next morning was Christmas, and Lance got me this really cool Buffalo horn for me to chew on. I chewed it and chewed it, with Skye all the while trying to take it from me. I gave her a bark to warn her that this was my toy, not her’s. She didn’t listen, and when I left for a bit to go see if I had gotten anything else, she had taken my horn and was chewing on it. Grrr.

This dog did not stop following me for the next three days. Everything I did, she did too. She tried to climb on top of me. She kissed my face over and over. This pup did not know any boundaries. Casey and Lance gave her so much attention too, which she happily gobbled up. So this fluffball can come in and invade my home, play with my toys and get pet and cuddled and kissed by my siblings, and what do I get out of all this? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I couldn’t wait for her to leave. Wait. What if she never leaves?

Skye

For some reason I went home with my uncle, aunt and cousins on Christmas Eve. I did not know why, but the floor of their car was comfortable, so I lay down and went to sleep.

I realized that I had been to their house once before. It was a nice house, and they had a dog, which meant that I would have someone to play with!

I ran inside and tried to find the dog I had played with once before. For some reason, he didn’t seem happy to see me. I tried to play with him, but he ran away.

I made it my goal to make this dog like me again. I tried to do everything that he did to impress him and to show him that I thought of him as the leader. I kissed his face so he would know that I loved him and really wanted to be his friend. Still, he just ignored me.

Eventually, he stopped growling at me when I played with his toys.

At this house, I had a lot of room to run around outside, and the family gave me tons and tons of attention. At home, I get tons of attention too, but here I got attention from new people, which was so much fun.

I really like this vacation I got to go on, but there’s no place like home, so hopefully one day I get to go back.

Maybe next time the other dog will like me again.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
