Race. It’s something that was created by a scientist in the 15th century as a way to define what category we fit into. However it wasn’t created as a way for us to drag each other down.
Now this isn’t an article saying that we all need to discredit this scientist and all be best friends and hold hands around the campfire, no. But I am saying that we need to stop using it as a way of hatred.
Saying racist comments is so easy to do. We hear them almost everyday and regardless whether or not you were taught to be racist we are all guilty of it. I’m guilty of it. I’ve said things that I probably shouldn’t have. Hell, I’ve even been racist against myself.
The other day, I had someone close to me tell me that someone was talking bad about me to them. I asked who it was and they told me. I almost laughed when I heard who it was because this person knows absolutely nothing about me. We’ve exchanged very few words and even though we run in the same mutual friend groups, this person still doesn’t know anything about me. I continued to ask what this person was saying about me, just in the sense that I thought it was interesting this person had so much to say about me.
I am not the type of person to care about what other people have to say about me, because I know who I am and what I stand for. That is just the type of person I am, but when I was told that they were racist comments about me, it made me stop and think.
This person knows nothing. They have no idea who I am, where I’ve come from, or anything remotely enough to give them any reason to talk about me. So they took the easiest way out by saying something racist.
We as humans are so much more than our physical attributes. We all have our own thoughts and personalities, and that make us so much more than just a certain skin color.
It’s easy to talk against a certain person. I get that. I’m not saying I’ve never said anything bad about anyone and honestly some people are just so awful that they probably do deserve what you’re saying. Just don’t take the easy way out and say something regarding where they come from or what they "are".
Resulting to make a comment about someone’s race as the soul purpose to talk badly about someone, in my opinion, is one of the most ignorant things you could ever do. By all means, get to know me before you open your mouth and say something to do with my race. Get to know anyone before you decide to make a comment about what they look like or what they stereotypically are said to be.
What would you be if you were not confined to the box you check off when answering what your race is on an application. Why does that even matter what race a person is, honestly? We are all the same. We are all human.
It’s an undeniable fact that racism is nothing but ignorance. That isn’t my opinion, that’s the truth.
