1. Underdogs have the advantage
Going into their first post-season game of the season, the number one seeded Eagles were still unfavored against the Falcons. The same followed suit again when matched against the Vikings. Of course, any team would be the underdog against the defending Super Bowl Champions, the Patriots who just completed the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history.
Having the expectation to win with the odds in your favor adds a lot more pressure. We all know how pressure can affect the outcome of a game, and most of the time, it isn't pretty. Only those with experience in pressure can effectively handle it. You'd think the Patriots would have the advantage in that regard? Not necessarily.
2. Experience can be a wildcard.
The Eagles haven't been in a Super Bowl in over a decade. Meanwhile, the Patriots have won two in the last three years, and when you think about it, the Patriots have far more playoff experience than the Eagles. The advantage when it comes to experience is obviously clear.
We expect those with more experience to perform at a higher level, but that wasn't the case. The Patriots were simply outplayed by the Eagles plain and simple.
3. Critical moments
It's astounding how a few minutes can alter the outcome of a game. Brady's missed catch, Ertz's dive touchdown, and the huge fumble combined only accumulated like a minute, yet they were such crucial plays. It just goes to show that whoever wins the most games are those who make the fewest mistakes.
Fortunately for the Eagles, they didn't really make that many mistakes compared to the Patriots. This wasn't expected at all!
4. Having the momentum
The Eagles kept playing good games going into the Super Bowl. They held off the Falcons and dominated the Vikings in style. Everything was going the Eagles way this entire post-season.
The Patriots had the momentum as well until they met up with the Jaguars in the conference championship. After a surprising upset against the Steelers, the Jaguars gave the Patriots a run for their money and halted the momentum the Patriots had after dominating the Titans. Though it wasn't enough, the Patriots pulled through at the end thus leading up to a huge Super Bowl.
5. Never give up.
Nick Foles, the MVP, had quite the interesting NFL career up until this point. Going from the Eagles to the Rams to the Chiefs and finally back to the Eagles as the backup QB, his future in the NFL seemed uncertain. He was benched all regular season until star QB Carson Wentz suffered a tragic ACL injury leaving Nick Foles to lead the Eagles in the post-season.
The momentum wasn't with him at all, but that didn't stop him. He kept playing his heart out in every game and look what happened! It's unbelievable, but now the big question is who's starting for the now defending Super Bowl champs next season.
