Take Risks, Not Care

We need to learn to take risks

Take Risks, Not Care

My family calls it "the box." The realm of what you're comfortable with, where you feel safe. We like to be in the box, or in our comfort zone. We're in control in our comfort zone. We know what to expect. But if we live life in our comfort zones, then we'll never grow and we'll never know if we really do dislike something or rather we were just scared of it. By learning to take risks and go outside of our comfort zone, then we learn to live.

Growing up, we're told to "be careful" or "don't do anything rash." We are taught from a young age that safety and security is a top priority. We are practically trained to stick with the known. Adults tell us to not talk to strangers, don't wander off alone, always ask permission before you go off and do this or that.

As a result, we aren't risk takers. We stay safe and play the rules. This puts us at a disadvantage when we get off into the real world. I still call my parents and ask their advice or permission before doing something. There's not necessarily anything wrong in that, but when their reply is no longer an actual answer but "you're an adult now, you can make your own decisions," I find myself somewhat at a lost. I have to make my own decisions? That's risky. That's not safe, I'm not comfortable with that.

Canon Andrew White, who came and spoke in one of my classes this past semester, advised us to "take risk, not care." We need to learn to take more risks. If we don't talk to strangers, then how do we make new friends and meet people who could change our lives? If we don't go exploring on our own, we'll miss out on so many amazing experiences. I'm from Florida, and I took a risk going to college in Chicago—a city I'd only been in once in my way to Hong Kong (another risk I had taken a year earlier). That risk that was so terrifying at first has ended up being one of the best decisions of my life. The strangers I talked to at college have become the best friends I've had.

The best thing about risks is that they are so unpredictable. You don't know what's going to happen and that's half the fun. You're actions and choices directly affect the outcome. Nothing is pre-planned for you. Mom and dad don't have every little detail perfectly groomed and put into place. You make the decision, and do live with the result.

Take a risk and apply for that job you don't think you're qualified for. Ask out that girl/guy from your science class that you think is cute. Take a trip to someplace you'd always wanted to go. Life is an adventure and every adventure is a risk. Obviously, don't put yourself into situations with unnecessary bad risks. Take good risks. If it doesn't turn out the way you hoped...Well that's why it's called a risk.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
