Take Me Back to the 90s

Life was so much simpler back in the 1990s — mainly because I was just a kid, but the 90s had so much to offer. I wish I could relive the 90s, and I am sure many other 90s kids can agree.

Back in the day, I was able to turn on Nickelodeon and find some of the greatest shows. All That was a classic. I also loved Kenan & Kel. My parents didn’t like when I stayed up late, but I was able to watch Kenan & Kel because they knew how much my brother and I enjoyed it. My parents would even watch it with us. Another great show was Full House. I secretly used to wish that Uncle Jesse was my uncle. I was also so confused that Mary Kate and Ashley interchangeably played Michelle Tanner.

The music kids used to obsess over was nothing like it is today. One Direction is popular with the younger girls, but I think that N*SYNC was much better. I use to pretend that Justin Timberlake of N*SYNC was my boyfriend. I was one of those kids that would use a hairbrush to sing to songs in the mirror. I also was a big fangirl for The Backstreet Boys. Personally, my favorite song was "Larger Than Life." I still listen to it and enjoy dancing to it. Britney Spears was my idol. Seeing her in concert was one of the highlights of my entire childhood. I had the HitClips of all her songs. My grandma use to surprise me with new songs every now and then for my HitClips. The Spice Girls were also great for dancing around. I had their CDs and used to make my mom play them in the car.

Back in the 90s, clothing was much different than it is today. Some of the fads have recently made a comeback. Some girls are trying to bring overalls back. They are nothing like the oversized ones people wore back in the 90s. I had a pair myself that I wore to school all the time. Sketchers were the cool sneakers to wear. If yours lit up, you were deemed “popular” back in kindergarten. And those plastic 90s chokers have made quite the comeback. A lot of girls now sport them around their necks, while some people think they should be left in the past. I am ecstatic that scrunchies have made a comeback. I used to have a scrunchie collection. I probably never even wore half of them. Now, I can constantly be seen with one around my wrist or in my hair.

My parents used to go overboard with Christmas gifts. “Santa” would get me whatever I wanted, and I had a massive collection of Beanie Babies. Today, they are stored in my attic, collecting dust. I also had a Furby. They made a comeback when I was in middle school and I made my parents buy me one. My Furbies used to wake me up at night, but it was totally worth it.

There were some tasty treats back in the day that unfortunately got discontinued. I was a big fan of Bubble Tape. My friends would try to eat an entire roll at the lunch table. Needless to say, we got in trouble, and bubble tape got banned from school. Crispy M&Ms were my favorite. I used to eat them all the time. When they got discontinued, I was devastated. However, Mars recently reintroduced them, and I am quite the fan again. Sometimes for lunch, my mom used to let my brother and I have Kid Cuisine. It was a treat whenever we went to the grocery store and got to pick out a few.

I miss the 1990s. Being a kid was great. Technology was so much simpler. If I could bring some of the goodness back, I absolutely would. I think many other 90s kids would agree. Let's at least bring back tying our sweatshirts around our waists. I will definitely sport that look again, even if my friends make fun of me.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
