I’m Not The 'Favorite Granddaughter' Anymore, And That’s OK
Everything changed with the addition of a new baby girl to our family.
For over 18 years, I was the only granddaughter in my family. I was the firstborn, the only girl, and the one who lived the closest to my grandparents. So, needless to say, I was the little princess of the family. My grandfather used to joke that I was his “favorite granddaughter," and I would usually respond with, “But I'm your only granddaughter!"
On the morning of June 10, 2019, however, that all changed. My aunt gave birth to a chubby, pink, and adorable baby girl, Adelynn Grace. When I first found out that she would be having a girl, I was a little disappointed. I wouldn't be the little princess anymore, and my grandpa would no longer be able to call me his “favorite."
But, now that another girl has entered the family, there are so many more things I can do that I never thought I'd be able to, unless I had a little girl one day (and trust me, that's YEARS away). For example:
I have a reason to save all of my homecoming and prom dresses! Maybe Adelynn will want to wear them one day.
I can shop for baby girl clothes! Have you ever stepped foot in the baby section at Target? It's impossible to resist.
I have someone to pass on my wisdom to. From homework to mean girls to boys, I've been through it all. Hopefully, I can help guide her through the rough parts of being a girl. I am an only child, so I was never able to have anything like an “older sister" experience. Adelynn will!
I finally have a reason to clean out all the old dolls, stuffed animals, kids movies, books, and goodness knows what else that I've been holding on to (“But it's sentimental, Mom!"). This little girl is already set with tons of things to play with for years to come!
I have a built-in mini-me! And trust me, I'm incredibly excited. I'm already planning some matching outfits.
I get to be a role model for another little girl, which is something I've always wanted.
So, even though I may not be the favorite granddaughter anymore, I'm OK with it. Swapping that title for the experience of watching Adelynn grow up is more than worth it. This princess is ready to pass on the crown.
