Freshmen Vs. Senior: Syllabus Week

Did you pack an entire backpack or just a pencil?

No matter where you attend school, the freshman college experience is essentially the same. You move in nervously with hoards of other confused children, no one really knowing what's going on. It can be difficult, but it can also be a lot of fun. Meanwhile, the experience has completely changed by the time you're a senior so that the weeks are barely recognizable as the same. Here are aspects of Syllabus Week seen through the eyes of freshmen and seniors.

1. Freshman Year: Arriving On Campus

Oh my gosh, I'm so nervous. I mean, I'm excited; but I don't want to leave my friends, and I'll miss my family and my dog. I'm going to call home literally everyday make my parents stay as late as possible. Can I take them with me?

Senior Year: Arriving On Campus

Dear Lord, I need the school year to come faster to get me out of this house and away from my parents and those random people from high school. Where are my friends? Can I come back early?

2. Freshman Year: Meeting Your Roommate

Hi! I can't believe I'm meeting you in person! I'm going to act really peppy talking to you even though I'm terrified and offer you the good bed because I don't want to offend you. Will you go to dinner with me and be my friend?

Senior Year: Meeting Your Roommate

HELLO, B*ITCH. I'M EXCITED YOU'RE HERE BUT I GOT HERE EARLY TO TAKE THE GOOD BED SO IT SUCKS TO SUCK YOU'RE GETTING FOOD WITH ME LET'S GO.

3. Freshman Year: Getting Alcohol

Do you know where we can get any? That girl down the hall has a brother who goes here and got her some, but I don't think I know her well enough to ask. Maybe I can ask that kid from my orientation group with the fake ID. Did you know you can get one of those? Also, we're getting Burnette's, right?

Senior Year: Getting Alcohol

I already went to the store yesterday; but I think I might go again because all I got was vodka and that's a lot of effort. I just want wine. Do you want to come to the store? I might need help carrying stuff because I'm picking up for five people.

4. Freshman Year: Going Out

Where do we go? The kids in these houses are being super mean. I just don't get why these seniors don't let us in to their houses. Those other kids just got in! I only know like two kids on this street. I'm so awkward, and my roommate is passed out somewhere. Can we go back and do shots? Wait, are they letting us into that basement?

Senior Year: Going Out

Ugh, who are these children running around trying to get into my house? Where are they coming from? I'm actually still getting dressed. They all look so small. Also, there are about five houses we need to go to tonight. I know that's annoying, but I promised the people who live there. Can I go out in sweatpants?

5. Freshman Year: Getting Ready For Class

I ordered my books five months in advanced from the bookstore, and all of my pens and pencils and staplers and white-out are in my backpack just in case I need any of them. I also bought ten packs of highlighters and did my homework when my professor emailed me in June.

Senior Year: Getting Ready For Class

Wait, I forgot that I needed to get stuff for class. I think I have some old notebooks I could use. I shopped around on Amazon for some books but I'll probably go to the bookstore on Tuesday and pick up the rest. We'll find out on the first day if I have reading.

6. Freshman Year: End Of Syllabus Week Thoughts

That was terrifying, but I'm so excited. Parts of this were kind of hard, I LOVE college! I'm going to be in college forever!

Senior Year: End Of Syllabus Week Thoughts

Forever crying that this was the final Syllabus Week. Maybe I should fail some classes this semester so that I can stay and do it again.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
