Life is full of intensely difficult decisions, some show immediate impact on our lives, while others take a while to implement themselves. One of the hardest decisions we make as college students is deciding on a major. This one choice will impact not only your future years as a student, but eventually job opportunities and ultimately your lifetime career.
Growing up, I was always filled with the ideal that I would eventually become a teacher. I had my hopes set on being a wonderful educator and helping the youth of America learn the lessons that would shape them for the rest of their lives. I went to a vocational school with this path on my mind, and I graduated with a certification to teach preschool. I then enrolled in Bridgewater State University as an Elementary Education major with the hope that I would get my degree and be able to finally begin my dream career of being a third grade teacher.
Things didn't quite turn out that way. As I began to take classes for my future career I realized that this wasn't something I was proud to be a part of. I found myself scared with the realization that I no longer loved the career I was working so hard to get to. I envisioned myself 10 years in the future with a job that I hated, and I knew right then that I needed to change my goals, and my major. I decided to begin pursuing a major in English with a concentration in writing.
Changing your major is a serious decision, it comes with a lot of deciding factors that should be thought out rationally. Yes, you can change your major multiple times, but my suggestion is that you should think out each change.
Transitioning to anything new can be a little scary, but take it from me, a college junior who just decided what she wants to major in. It is possible to switch your major to a completely different subject and still graduate on time. Now I am in love with my classes and all of the things I am studying. I don't get restless listening to lectures, and thinking of my future career makes me so excited. So whether you are trying to decide which major to pick, or if you should switch, just keep in mind that it is never too late to fall in love with a new subject and new things to learn about. The decision you make will impact your future, so make it the best one you can envision for yourself.
