What I want incoming freshman to understand

Sweet friend,

Don’t try so hard.

College is suppose to be four (or five) of the best years of your life. Don’t let the pressure of those around you bring you down.

It’s okay if you don’t want to rush; rush is not for every person. However, don’t be afraid to be friends with those who do rush, there are good people in Greek life.

It’s okay if you do want to rush. Don’t let the stigma that people have towards Greek life steer you from amazing opportunities that interest you.

It’s okay if your major is not a science major; it’s okay if you don’t want to be a nurse, or you have a love for art. Be respectful of everyone and their passion, though.

It’s okay if you are not in the party scene. It’s not for every person, and you will find people who would rather go to Cookout with you than a party involving alcohol.

It’s okay if you fail one class. College will be hard. However, your college experience won’t end because you didn’t pass Math. Make sure to collect yourself, and try harder next time.

It's okay to have a job. It'll be difficult to balance everything, but so rewarding in the end. You'll experience your first taste of freedom and self-sufficiency.

It’s okay if you are coming to college with a completely clean slate. Not every person had a beautiful experience walking out of high school. Don’t let those demons of the past keep you from finding your group here. Through the years, you will change. Be open to your friend group changing as you grow and experience college, and learn who you want to be.

Don’t try so hard, sweet friend.

You will find the group that loves you dearly.

You will find what sets your heart ablaze and pushes you to do better.

You will find those extra-curricular activities that you will fall in love with. Whether it is a hobby, a religious group, or a cause that grabs your heart, you will find it. Don’t let snide remarks stop you from doing something that you find fun.

It’s okay if you don’t change your major. You're not required to change your major, and if you love what you are studying, don’t change it because your friends are changing theirs.

It’s okay if you do change you major. Don’t force yourself to be in a major that is killing you, both mentally and emotionally. Go for the next best option. It’s okay.

Four years (or five) of college are meant to be an exciting, emotional, growth period. Where you get to become who you always wanted to be. Have the time of your life; work hard; dream and get excited.

Don’t try so hard, sweet friend.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
