I Swear We're Not Crazy

Talking about theatre kids and why we do what we do!

I Swear We're Not Crazy
Kylie Bushman

I swear we aren’t crazy! Being a musical theater major, I spend most of my time with others who enjoy theater in its different forms. Often we can be seen as odd because of the different things you may catch theater people doing, but I swear this is normal for us. We are a species all our own, so here is a look into the odd habits of Theater students and why we are the way we are.

We Have No Boundary’s

Often, you will catch us all over each other in many different ways. Hugs, kisses and snuggles are always welcome here. We have almost no sense of personal space, and are very open physically and vocally. When acting you have to be willing to do almost anything, so we have just gotten used to it and now we are good with anything. This isn’t only physically but even having conversations with us can get odd. I do promise, once you get used to it, you’ll see it isn’t as weird as you may think.

We Will Start Breaking out into Song and Dance

Many people question musicals because of their unrealistic nature of random song and dance numbers happening in normal life. For us at times this is normal. We are so interested in musicals that we can see opportune moments to just start singing. Dancing of any kind is also always an option. Tapping, ballet or whatever your feeling at the moment, it doesn’t matter if you look ridiculous, you’ll be fine!

We LOVE Napping!

Working in theater can get pretty busy, taking up your days and your nights. So we often try and find places to take just a few minutes to close our eyes and relax. When you are always at practice you can’t exactly go home and take a power nap so we make do with what we got. Sleeping back stage, on set, where ever we can get comfy works for us. I have even fallen asleep on the stairway right next to the stage just in case I was needed. Now this is not as odd as other things because I could see other busy people doing this, we just get a little more creative.

This isn’t even the end of it, like I stated previously, we are a special kind of people with special ways of doing things. I’ve been a part of musical theater for a while now and I love every minute of it! I couldn’t imagine living any other way or with any other kind of people. All are welcome to us as well! Come and see for yourself that we can be super fun all together!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
