Sustainability: Why It Matters

Whether you believe change is happening or not, it's still our duty to contribute.

There has been a big debate for a while about the reality of climate change, and how our world is being affected by it. Many people don't believe this change is a real thing.

Many believe that if it is, it's not our fault. One thing that's important about these arguments is, they shouldn't matter. If change is happening in the world, in our climate, higher than it has ever been, we need to figure something out. It is our responsibility to the future generation to begin figuring things out. It doesn't matter if you believe this spike in climate is just a cycle of the earth, or if you believe that this change isn't all our fault.

There is a potentially big shift happening in climate and it is at least somewhat tied to us, the people here living on earth.

So what can we do about it? First, climate change is about more than the melting of glacial ice. It is in the emission of carbon we put into the atmosphere, and how we contribute to greenhouse gases.

Sustainability itself is also more than just climate change. It's also about the pollution we put into the atmosphere and oceans. And one of the big pollution problems we are facing is our use of plastic. Everyday, Americans use tons upon tons of plastic in their everyday life. We use plastic grocery bags, drink out of plastic straws, use plastic lids. This doesn't seem like much but this plastic builds up quick with all the little ways we use it.

How do we cut down? It's genuinely not that hard. Just make an effort. It's worth it to go out of your way to make a difference in the world. Use a metal straw instead of a plastic one.

Use reusable shopping bags when you go to the store. Making even a small effort is a big difference because change starts with all of us.

The reason we all push this so much is that we are scared of the consequences. Scared of what can happen if we don't even attempt to make a difference.

We can all help contribute to the betterment of the world we live in if we make the choice to. Don't ignore the threat of climate change, even if you don't believe in it. Make an effort to vote for people who will put forth renewable energy into our world to better the quality of our earth. Make an effort, that's all that is asked of anyone. And it can help.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
