As the first day of classes draws near, here are a few tips on how to survive your first week of college.
1. Scope out your classes:
When I first arrived on campus as a freshman, the first thing I did was print my schedule. It's always handy to have a physical copy of your class schedule in case you have phone malfunctions. I recommend walking around campus and finding each classroom you'll be in. This will help to minimize any confusion or anxiety you might have on the first day.
2. Always arrive early:
Arriving early to your classes the first week is a great way to show your professor that you care about their class. It's also beneficial to arrive early in case there is a last minute room change. Also, you get the chance to pick a seat that suits you the best.
3. Don't be afraid to ask for help:
Upperclassmen can be your best resource when it comes to your first day of classes. Don't be afraid to ask someone where a classroom is. They've been where you are right now and know how scary it can be trying to locate classes, building or turn in paperwork.
4. Pack a Snack
I know this seems like a really simple tip, but honestly, it's one thing that most people forget to do their first day of classes. You're excited to get to classes, meet new people, and make friends that you forget to take time for yourself and refuel. If you're worried you won't have time to eat, pack a snack in your backpack that you can eat on your way to class. You can also find a specific time during the day that you know you'll be free and set an alarm on your phone. Eating is the most important thing to remember on your first day, it can be tiresome walking around to classes or sitting through syllabus readings, and I guarantee you'll feel a lot better when you have some food in you.
5. Communicate with your professor:
Usually the first week of classes consists of going through the syllabi. If you have a question or concern about any information in the syllabi, take the time after class to talk to your professor. If you have days that you know you're not going to be able to make it to class contact your professor and discuss your options. Professors are very understanding and want to make sure you get as much from their class as you possibly can.
6. Enjoy yourself:
Even though classes are starting that doesn't mean you have to stop having fun. Take the time to attend any on-campus events that might be going on throughout the day. Student Activities tries to plan events at different times during the day to give more options to those who might have classes during other scheduled events.
Always remember, college is meant to be an experience, so why not make it a fun experience.
