In the aftermath of the recent tragic event in Orlando, I think that it is important to talk about the current gun laws and what would be a rational way to revise them. Let me start off by saying that I am a supporter of the second amendment but I strongly believe that there are ways that the current gun laws could be changed if the government and public would allow it. As it seems right now, there is not much that the government can do without the support of the people, but there is no majority agreement between the people.
The second amendment states "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." This allows for the country to have an army while also giving the people of the nation access to guns. While this is good for the most part, the amendment was written when guns took much longer to put together and load for a single bullet, it was not talking about the ones that we have today. The second amendment was meant to protect citizens, but, as times have changed, so has the need for regulation on this freedom. Citizens should not have unlimited access to guns for their own safety as well as the safety for other citizens.
Guns are used for many different reasons from hunting to protecting oneself. Whatever the reason is, as long as it isn't hurting anyone for no reason I say go for it. The issue that I see is when people don't use their guns safely or allow them to get into the hands of people who won't use them safely. Then there's the even more scary though of how people who seem normal but have horrible intentions. There are currently not enough regulations to prevent dangerous people from buying guns for various reasons. Yes there is always the argument that criminals don't follow the law, but with more regulations it is possible to lower the threat of unnecessary gun violence.
I think that more extensive requirements should be put in place in order to ensure the safety of all citizens. A good option would be to require licenses to buy and/or use guns like are needed for buying and using cars. Drivers need to take a written and driving test in order to be able to get a drivers license and drive a car. Why are tests not required for people that want to buy guns? I feel like guns are about as dangerous especially if someone doesn't have the knowledge to operate them properly. I don't know about you but proper education on something as dangerous as a gun seems to be a logical requirement in order to be able to own it.
