Nowadays, there isn’t really a “normal” route when it comes to college. Some people finish in three years and others may take seven years. Some may change their major five times and others may graduate with the major they started with. Some may transfer schools multiple times and other may start and finish at the same school.
“Normal” doesn’t exist anymore. Get it through your brain. It’s okay to not have a clue what you want to do with the rest of your life. Start somewhere and grow off of that. It’s okay to hate your major and change it to something you realize you now love. It’s okay to hate the college you’re at and transfer to somewhere that makes you feel at home. It’s okay to take longer to graduate because it just gives you more experience with everything!
I have transferred schools two times, which means I am attending my third college. With all this transferring comes a lot of classes that “don’t count” or are now electives. I also have two majors, and it is kind of a hot mess sometimes. With that being said, I’m starting my fifth year of college this fall.
I’m officially a super senior.
Is it terrifying? Yes.
Am I going to be paying off student loans for the rest of my life? I really hope not.
Over the years I’ve learned that I look younger than I am, and often get mistaken for a highschooler (of course I’m offended, I’m 21). This means that even though I am older than most of my friends, I can still fit in with them at their young age.
I have also really come to love school, except for the homework part.
When I first started college, I was telling my mom all the cool classes that I was wanting to take, and she told me that I wouldn’t be able to take all of them or else I would be in school for the rest of my life. Five years sometimes feels like the rest of my life, but I love to learn, it’s something that I got from my mom, and it’s a really great attribute to have, especially when you are going to be teacher (yay for education majors!).
I am truly excited to be going to school for three more semesters. It took me a little bit to get to this point, but I now get to make more friends and attend the fun, free activities offered on campus (emphasis on free), but most importantly, I get to spend three more semesters at the college that I really love.
If you’re going to be a super senior this fall, don’t fret!
Enjoy your time being a college student, the best five, six, seven years of your life! It may be difficult, and you may have senioritis for most of your time, but the experiences, people and friendships that you build will make it all worth the blood, sweat and tears of finally getting to walk across the stage and get that diploma to become a real working adult.
