The joys of living and learning at SUNY Cobleskill

My School: A Gem Among Colleges

When I first started thinking about college and what I wanted to do with my life, I had absolutely no idea where to start. Although I did have an interest in photography and art, I wasn’t sure what major I should pursue. I was looking into Liberal Arts colleges like York College of Pennsylvania and SUNY Delhi, but none of them seemed to fit. At the time I didn’t really know much about SUNY Cobleskill other than that a family member had gone there years before and that it had a Liberal Arts division. Little did I know that I would love the campus and meet friends who will surely last a life time.

I can’t imagine experiencing college any other way. It is the perfect fit -- small class sizes, picturesque campus with a population of a little over 2,000 students. The library became a great place to go, whether it was just to stop by quickly to print something out before class or to spend hours during finals week making sure i had learned all the fascinating stages of mitosis. The happy and friendly professors are always there to help and seem eager to make us students feel supported and not all alone. I quickly made friends in each of my classes and can say I feel totally comfortable walking on our beautiful campus, often waving to both friends and professors alike.

Being a college student I could always use extra cash, so I went on a job hunt and last February I was lucky enough to find one I really enjoy. The on campus Cobleskill child care center was the perfect fit for me. In fact, I am very excited about the prospect of working there once again this coming August. Since I graduated high school, I have met so many new people and had experiences I know I wouldn’t have had if I had decided to commute.

I can’t express enough how wonderful SUNY Cobleskill really is. There is a warmth and general feeling of welcome that spreads throughout the campus. I am proud to say I will be graduating with my Bachelors of Science in Graphic Design in spring of 2018. Year after year I hear about students not being happy with their schools and transferring. The grass is always greener, they say. Well I’m happy to say that I’ve never felt that way and can’t wait to get back in a little over a month. My school is a gem and I can’t express that ENOUGH! I don’t know what I like better, the graphic design program and how all of the professors are so passionate about what they do in teaching their students, or how friendly and beautiful the campus is. It does help that the campus is nestled in the beautiful Catskill mountains.

I also love that every semester you receive $150 dollars in Coby Cash and downtown dollars. So if you venture off campus, you always have money in your pocket. If you ever want to go out for dinner with friends but are on the typical college student budget you won't have to worry because you can use these downtown dollars in restaurants and other places. You can also use Coby Cash in the book store or in the dining halls. And by the way, did I mention the many awesome eating spots on campus? From Brew House to Twisted Whiskers, there's a place that fits everyones style and gives students a chance to decompress from their academic responsibilities.

I guess I could go on and on about my beloved SUNY Cobleskill! From the amazing classes in my major and friendly, positive, professors, to a beautiful campus and all that goes with it, my school is awesome! Most importantly, it was the perfect choice for me.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
