Seven things to thank spring for

Made For Sunny Days
Sarah Spaulding

Hello, March! Is that Spring I smell in the air?

I know some of you Carson-Newman students might have a hard time believing spring is here, considering we've had snow flurries in the last few days, and the other half of you are in the same boat as me, thinking: "March?! It's March?! February gave me and extra day and I still wasn't ready!" But, believe me, spring has sprung.

Whether or not you believe that we are out of winter's clutches or not, here are some blessings to consider thanking spring for.

1. Sunshine!!!

If sunshine does not come to mind when you think of the word 'spring', then I don't know what does. After every cold and gloomy winter, what is more rejuvenating than sunshine to a landscape and a human heart? No more cramped and stuffy dorm room for you and me, sister! It is time to lay out and stay out.

2. Uplifting Qualities

Going along with number one, sunshine actually awakens your brain and can help with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Brightening and warming up does more for a person than we even know. Also, the fresh air has a way of cleansing our inner selves.

3. Color

Yes, I'm talking about how spring brings back into existence flowers, leaves, grass, and blue skies. After the doom and gloom of the winter wasteland, some of us begin to feel like we will never see more than white and grey ever again. So, thanks spring! It's good to remember the world doesn't just exist in shades of grey.

4. Life

With spring comes the creation and awakening of life. Whether spring holds months of religious holidays for you, or not, hope buds on every branch and life is born to animals and humans, alike.

5. A Break

SPRANG BREAK, am I right? The real namesake of spring is Spring Break, a.k.a. a chance to relax from classes go have some fun in the sun (literally). Spring is a big, fat congratulations to you for surviving a grueling amount of homework, chapped lips, and girls in UGG boots; so, go a little crazy!

6. Warmth

Time to ditch that snot-stained overcoat you've been wearing for 4 months straight through cold and flu season! Warming temperatures mean more ice cream and less layers, which is something we can all be happy about. Alright Chaco cult, it's time to do your thing.

7. Car Rides

Last, but certainly not least, spring gives us one of life's greatest pleasures: a sun shining, windows down, music blaring joy ride to anywhere. How can you not feel like a new person after feeling your hair whip in the warm wind as you screamed "Electric Feel" by MGMT??

So yes, it is March. And yes, life is chugging along. But when life is dark and cold, remember what is just around the corner: Vivacious and Rejuvenating Spring. And when you are sneezing from allergies and long for the sniffles of winter, remember that you can now breath in the smell of rain on a warm, spring sidewalk, and maybe a small smile of gratitude will cross your newly freckled face.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
