No matter what you call them, they are just different names for the same dreadful feeling that many people experience before heading back to work or class after the weekend off. The term "Sunday Scaries" describes the feeling of uneasiness that seems to build up over the course of your Sunday.
Personally, I never really started experiencing the Sunday Scaries until I transferred to UGA this past fall. Being a full-time student that works two jobs during the week I rarely have time to relax or have a social life. I live by the "work hard, play hard" mentality, and on Saturday's I definitely partake in that 'play hard' scenario during football season. Every Sunday I wake up and want to continue to lay in bed, but I also have ten million school assignments due.
Huh? I totally thought the term was just coined by Barstool Sports and that it was just made up. Turns out that the concept wasn't just a mentality, but it turns out to be real.
Whether you work a forty hour work week or are enrolled in school full-time the scaries could possibly hit you at any given time. I don't really know if it inevitable to catch or not, but for some people the struggle is more intense and could be a cause for concern.
I investigated some more on social media for a better understanding and was astonished with what I found. It turns out that a lot of people have a lot of different ways for avoiding the Sunday Scaries. The most popular norm for college students is to participate in "Sunday Funday" which includes consuming as much alcohol as possible until the scaries are gone. Another option was just simply curling up with junk and binge watching Netflix all day.
I don't recommend numbing your pain with alcohol or junk food, but there are healthy escapes that can ease the pain of the upcoming Monday. In a survey I took on Twitter, enjoying a nice well prepared meal and taking a 30 minute jog were the top two options chosen to escape the pain.
I believe that if your anxiety and stress run deep then you need to participate in a healthy Sunday activity that takes your mind off the upcoming week. Especially with finals season coming up the scaries might becoming more frequently than Sunday. The best solution to defeat this problem is to find your beach, and figure out a way to individually beat it yourself.
