We're roughly halfway through summer, and by now many of you have your golden browns, your crisp tan lines, and your beach-worthy skin. How lovely it must be to be able to show off the color you've gained from simply being outdoors for a few hours each day.
For those of us who look more like this:
Summer is not such an enjoyable season.
In fact, at a time when so many people are so open with showing some skin and soaking up the sun, it can be tough for us pale people to truly feel like we fit in.
Now some might think, since you're paler to begin with, you must be capable of an even darker tan. This flawed thinking uses the same logic as someone who thinks that if they skip a meal their stomachs will magically grow larger and they'll be able to eat more next time.
For some of us pale folks, no matter how much time we spend in the sun, we can only achieve a certain level of "tan" (which for the rest of the world looks how everyone else is coming out of winter). For others, any prolonged session in direct sunlight can result in something like this:
Horrifying.
As one who has heard it all about having pale skin, I can say. Yes, it does suck that we can't get a nice tan for the summer and feel gloriously golden brown for a few months. No, there is nothing at all that we can do about it. In fact, as sad as it is, it's probably better for us not to try to get a tan, as our sensitive skin is even more prone to damage from the UV rays.
Sure, getting a spray tan is an alternative, but not one I would want to take. I would much rather stay the color of milk than end up looking like an Oompa Loompa.
And let's be real, that's Anne Hathaway. I'm seriously doubting that anyone else would be able to rock traffic cone orange better than her.
So we unhappy lot must resort to shamefully covering our glowing skin with sheer fabrics in the hotter months, or slathering on the SPF 900 to protect our porcelain complex from turning lobster red. We can't even fight it or do anything to change the fact that we will be this way all our life.
The sun? We pale people are not a fan. Yeah it's nice that it gets a little warmer, but all it really does is point out how much paler than the rest of the general population we are.
So the next time you go to make a joke at the expense of your pale friend, or when you want to complain about getting a little burnt or your tan lines not being even, just remember to count your blessings. You're fortunate to be able to even obtain a darker hue in the summer.
