Summer is the season immediately following Spring, and immediately preceding Fall (otherwise known as Autumn). Summer is also traditionally the period of time in which schools take their longest break. Likely you, my dearly beloved reader, are yourself enrolled in an educational institution and thus experience this period of summer as a time of unrestrained freedom, exuberant delight, and nebulous structure. All of these things are wonderful, certainly, but sometimes the lack of responsibility can leave us feeling unsure of what we should do with our sudden abundance of spare time. Here are a few ideas that I have. I have no qualifications nor any authority on this subject, and honestly there is no reason you should expect anything of quality from me. But I mean, hey, if you're really so bored that you clicked this, here they are...
1. Watch some good movies
You have a lot of time this summer, its true. But unlike people, all movies are not created equal. Don't waste time with bad movies, watch good ones. How will you know if they're good before you watch them? Easy. Judge them by the cover. Then, find some friends and watch the movie together! Eat popcorn! Or just stay at home and sit in front of a screen for hours on end like the mindless drone that you are.
2. Surf the web
Did you know that the internet is infinite, and constantly expanding? Wow. Go check it out. There's a lot you can find out there. Perhaps you will even find an opinionated online list that tells you things and says words and stuff. Those are the best. If you want to be a well rounded quality person you should probably read about 30 of those this summer. Per day. No, seriously, you should read them. They're written by good, quirky people who don't know any other way of expressing themselves and they're probably ESFPs or extroverted introverts or whatever and they're sensitive people and they really really appreciate you reading and sharing and it just means so much please keep reading.
3. Go on a picnic (happy, attractive friends not required)
Eating outside is a lot like eating inside, only less efficient. It is, however, way more fun. Try it! Embrace your wild side!
4. Read big, scary books
Take some time to read books this summer. Not just any old books, big books! You could read a lot of regular sized books, that's true. But if you really want to maximize your intelligence, you should read big, difficult, frightening books. This not only makes you much smarter than the average person, but it also enables you to act like a pretentious prick without being hypocritical. Not to brag, but I am currently reading both Ulysses by James Joyce and Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. Once I've finished them, it will allow me to look down on almost every person I interact with in my life. This is a tremendously valuable skill and one you should attempt to pursue with your free time this summer. So crack out that copy of War and Peace you've been keeping on your desk to casually impress people and actually read it.
5. Think about how special and whimsical you are
Did you know that you are a totally unique person? That's pretty neat. You have so many amazing qualities and talents, its incredible. Likely, not everyone recognizes or appreciates those talents of yours. You are just too special for some people to handle. This is okay. Don't let the hate drag down your whimsy. Your quirkiness isn't socially awkward and genuinely annoying, its brilliant! Embrace it!
6. Write.
Your brain has thoughts, but other people don't get the joy of experiencing your thoughts unless you convey them in some other way. Writing is one way to do that. So write some stuff this summer! Maybe even get an account on Odyssey and write things and force them on people so that they can read your thoughts!!! You could even get an account and use it to write passive aggressive articles alarmingly similar to the ones that have agonized you for the past year. The possibilities are endless.
7. Go outside
There's a whole world out there beyond your front door. Go look at it for a few minutes sometime. You might be surprised at how bright it is. Other than that though there isn't too much of interest.
8. Seek validation.
Everyone needs validation, and you're no exception! So try random stuff in an attempt to fill the aching hole of desire in your heart this summer. You might even get lucky and be mildly successful.
Good luck! Hopefully you gained some good ideas for spending your summer time by reading this list. Stop by next week for some more incredibly insightful ideas!
