No amount of miles can separate some of these sisters.
After missing Boulder for too long, sisters begin to get together to catch up and make plans for the coming school year.
While summer is a great time to relax, being home gets old after a week or two. You start missing CU’s campus, the Flatirons, and especially your friends. Luckily, joining Greek life gives you a wide spread of people you know and love in multiple states.
Many Gamma Phis have reunited with their bigs, littles, and best friends this summer. Of course, it’s fairly easy to meet up with other Colorado residents. Marilyn Alexander went to a Rockies game with some sisters, while Kailee Caranta did some tubing in Golden with her grand-little, Morgan Nielsen. Some other Colorado natives, Becca Ingwers, Taylor Arnold, and Blythe Befus saw the Fray at Red Rocks. Ingwers said it was “so fun to reunite after a month. Nothing had changed!”
Sandra Kalavity, another in-state student, was able to spend some time with her big and twin one night. All three live in different cities in Colorado, but because of work and travel schedules, the family had not been able to reunite until half way through the summer.
It’s not just in-state girls that are able to get together with their sisters, I’m from California and was able to visit one of my best friends, Annalise Ricco, in Seattle. Ricco lives on Bainbridge Island, so my family and I took a ferry out to see her. We went kayaking around the harbor and then received a tour of the island from a local’s perspective. Just seeing a friend from Boulder made me even more excited to get back to school.
Two of our executive board members got to see each other in California. Erin Bode, a California resident, was able to meet up with Deanna Lueck who was visiting her sister in California. Lueck is from Michigan and loves visiting the west coast, so the two of them spent lots of time by the pool. They shared stories of their summer and planned for adventures in Seattle with the rest of the executive board.
The board, which includes many sisters from out-of-state, was thrilled to get to see one another in Seattle for the Gamma Phi convention. They planned for the school year and enjoyed bonding in a different city, though everyone is looking forward to being back in Boulder together.
Every time pictures of my sisters hanging out together pop up on Facebook, it reminds me how much being in a sorority has helped me form close bonds with such wonderful girls. The fact that we are all willing to go out of our way to see the girls we call our sisters just proves how much sisterhood influences our lives. We love these people that we’ve surrounded ourselves with so much, that it’s almost impossible to go a full three months without seeing them. As the school year draws closer, I don’t dread going back to papers, finals, and assignments: I'm excited because I know it’s the chance for me to spend every day with some of the women who mean the most to me.
