Why My Summer Job Means More Then The Typical Job

I do not consider my job to be work.

When I applied I had no idea what was in store for me.

Growing up I always connected summer time to the lake. The two were made to go together hand-in-hand, so it only makes since that I found a way to combine my favorite place and work. Last summer coming out of high school I had a friend beg me to come apply and work with her at Sunset Grille on Lake Allatoona. I was extremely hesitant at first, considering I would be coming in half way through June attempting to "fit in" an already close knit group of people. I could not be more thankful towards a group of people.

Going to work quickly became something I enjoyed.

Not only did I enjoy seeing my coworkers, but I started developing regulars, and it was nice to see them as well. The job was and is everything I could have asked for in a summer job.

Working on the lake has its ups and downs.

This first time it stormed I found out how slow a 4pm - 10pm shift could go by. Working in a basically all outdoor restaurant means sunshine and warm weather are almost a necessity. I make the joke by saying I become a meteorologist during the summer because I study the radar and percentages every single day.

Another summer is still ahead of me.

Towards the end of last semester I was coming home almost every weekend to work. This is something I did not mind and when friends from school asked why I was doing it I’d say because I couldn’t wait to start another summer there.

Sunset has turned into more than just a job to me. It has turned into a place I go to see familiar faces I enjoy spending time with whether it be a coworker or a customer.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
