Summer. When I think of this time, I think a time of break. A time to spend with friends. A time that you are away from school. A time when you won't see your friends from college. It is a time of transition if you are going to college from high school like I was two years ago. Or if you are going to college for the rest of your life, like I will be two years from now. It is just a time that most young people enjoy; it is a break from school and a time for fun. This summer is different for me because I am spending two months in the wonderful state of Colorado.
It is a change from normal summers because this summer is for me. I realized this more than anything while I was on a retreat for my internship. This summer is for finding myself. To see how I will live alone. To see how I will interact with strangers in my internship who might become life-long friends. It is to see how I will interact in high-stress situations. To see how I will feel in a single bedroom by myself. I realize this summer is to focus on myself and not be so dependent on others.
Living in a duplex with strangers that I would not have met if it was not for my internship. It was weird at first, but it is fun. It is fun to get to know new people and find out who I am with new people. I feel like I have been with the same people for the last two years. It is fun to get to know new ones. It is also fun to see how I have matured since Freshman year. Starting a new internship with 30 other people around me is exciting as well. I can see that we all have one goal, we want to make an impact on these students' lives. We want to help these students achieve. We also genuinely want to get to know each other. Everyone seems caring and nice. It is much different than freshman year; we are not trying to act cooler than one another or bragging about life in high school. I am finding out who I am as a person. Doing a summer academy for at-risk youth will be a challenge. But it can be a test of who I will be as a teacher. Taking a summer internship lets me see how I will act in the classroom with the students. I am really excited to take on this challenge and work in the classroom. I can find myself in how I will be in the classroom.
