Why Summer Break Is Better In College

I look forward to summer break even more than I did when I was in high school.

As many people do, I too always look forward to summer break when school is out and I'm worry-free. Now, being a college student and heading into my junior year this coming fall, I look forward to summer break even more than I did when I was in high school. There are a few reasons why I feel this way, as I'm sure I'm not the only one that thinks so.

Sleeping in your own bed.

One of the first things I always look forward to when coming from home is finally being able to sleep in my own bed, in my own room. It definitely beats being stuck in a twin sized bed, while sharing a small, cramped space with someone else on campus, while basically sharing everything else at school.

Reconnecting with old friends.

It's always a great feeling when you get to see some of your closest friends after a long time apart, especially when you have a lot to catch up on, like when you come home from college for break. Nothing beats getting to hear about your closest friend's semester and experiences, while sharing your own. Not to mention, it's always a great feeling to get to return to doing some of your favorite things with some of your favorite people.

Home-cooked food.

Getting away from campus for the summer is always something to look forward to. But the fact that going home means you get to eat actually real food is always a plus; and you'll be able to eat more than just the same few things over and over while being home.

Summer jobs.

Having a summer job whether in college or not is always a plus-- mostly because that means you can earn money. But, college makes us even more poor than high school does, so earning a little more money in your bank account to go to your next semester, or to make up for the past semester is always something to look forward to when coming home for the summer from college.

Flip-flop-free showers.

Nothing is more annoying than having to wear shoes in the shower, like when at college and worrying about who used that shower before you. Being in the comfort of your own bathroom and getting to shower barefoot is always something to look forward to when coming home from college

Laundry

Coming home for the summer and not having to race a bunch of other students to the laundry machines, or collect quarters to pay at the laundromat is one of the greatest things about being home from college for the summer.

Pets

The first thing I Immediately look for when I get home from college are my dogs. Coming home after being away at school for weeks at a time and seeing my dogs as happy to see me as I am to see them is one of the greatest feelings, and makes it even harder to know I'll have to leave them for school in the fall.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
