Summer Break And The Gym Just Don't Mix

Getting that "Summer Bod" is way harder than it seems

Summer Break And The Gym Just Don't Mix

Every spring, around the end of the semester, there is always this hug buzz going around about everyone working out hard core to get their "Summer Bod," yet if you see these same exact people in the middle of the summer, nothing has changed about them, well physically. Getting a summer bod is pretty much everyone's goal, I mean who wouldn't want to look awesome on their beach trip to Panama City? But the time and effort it takes to get that body is a lot more than expected.

Honestly, most college students really aren't that out of shape, sure they aren't professional athletes that could run 15 miles straights and squat 400 pounds (well most of them aren't at least), but they also aren't couch potatoes that weigh 350 pounds. But for the majority of them that end the school year weighing in at 175 with just a little pudge to keep them warm at night, those last 15 pounds before summer starts are their worst nightmares.

During the school year it is easy to hit the gym most days and keep a strong schedule to hold your self-accountable for, like going to the gym every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 12 after Chemistry with your best friend Claire, but once summer hits that structure and scheduling is almost nonexistent. Once you've gotten home and settled back in, everyone tries to set a gym schedule, but something always seems to get in the way. Dinner with your high school best friend, working at your old job, family functions...family functions are always timed just perfectly to interrupt previous plans, your car needs an oil change that is way over due, your gym buddy Claire is 1,500 miles away, a baseball game that your best friends invited you to, that summer concert you've been dying to go to, essentially you can think of anything and everything that sounds better and more important that hitting the gym. So eventually you give up, decide that your body is fine just the way that it is (which is actually the honest truth) and decide to pick back up with the gym in August, when summer jobs are over and everything is calming back down in preparation for school to commence once again, thinking to yourself, next summer all get that summer bod I've always wanted.

Long story short, summer bods are totally overrated, of course everyone should stay in shape just so that they can be happy and healthy, but there is no need for a six pack in June just so you can feel comfortable going to the beach with you friends, because quite honestly you already look great just the way that you are.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
