Summer And The Young Adult

A little more 'Endless Summer,' a little less '9 to 5.'

Summer And The Young Adult

I feel old. Not like ancient, but not like a kid anymore, which I think is a good thing in most aspects of my life. I mean, I can successfully fill up my car now without having to call my mom and ask her what grade fuel I need. That seems pretty adult of me, right? But something not so cool about feeling older is that it also feels like the summer no longer applies to me in the way it used to. I've been attempting to combat that feeling for the past few weeks, so here are some things I've done to enjoy my summer while also attempting to be a productive member of Adult America.

1. Reading

This seems like the most adult activity on this list, but let's be real, I am a dork. I can accept it now as the truth. I am a dork now and I was a dork when I was younger, so reading was pretty much a daily staple for me growing up. Going to high school and college and being basically forced to read for a grade had dampened my enjoyment for reading. I thought picking it back up again would be a nice, relaxing gesture for myself. I was right.

2. Taking Walks in the Evening

Annie, isn't walking slowly around a neighborhood at dusk such an old person thing to do? The answer is no -- get with the times. It is an extremely calming activity and the most beautiful end of a long work day I can think of. It allows me to clear my head and enjoy the summertime at its most pleasant.

3. Hanging Out with My Parents and (if possible) Babies

I realize that this one may not be possible for some people. But if it is, take some time and just chill with your parents. Mine are a lot cooler than I give them credit for and I really like being around them, especially when we can all just hang out and watch a movie or a baseball game. They always make me feel heard, but also treat me like I'm still their young, semi-oblivious daughter. It is very grounding. Added bonus if you can also see your parents in action around a baby or a toddler. I had this opportunity and did not stop smiling the whole day.

These suggestions are a little odd and not very exciting, but they have really made a difference in my summer so far. If you're feeling a little old, a little run down and a little work-worn, maybe give one or two of these things a try. They may just make the summer feel a little more endless, like it used to.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
