Before I started college, I thought that missing school over the summer was something that only happened to Harry Potter, which was understandable for him seeing as he had an awful home life and his school was mother loving Hogwarts!
While my school is not Hogwarts (Sadly, they don't take FAFSA!), leaving for the summer was a lot more bittersweet than I thought it would be going in. It's only been two weeks, but I'm already homesick for my campus. There's a lot going through my head as the summer slowly progresses.
Obviously, I miss my friends more than anything. It's difficult going from spending 75% of your day together to only communicating through group messages and Snapchat. Nothing says friendship like sending each other memes at 2 a.m. or waking up to the group chat blowing up your phone.
Then, there are those people on your social media going on vacation and blowing up your news feed. You try not to be bitter about it. Your friends deserve to get out there and have a good time away from their homes and jobs.
Speaking of jobs, you told yourself you were going to get one of those this summer. You put in applications and try to be patient while waiting to hear back from the employers. You don't have a lot of experience or any idea what your actual best quality is for working at a Pizza Hut.
All of the free time you now have makes you realize just how much college consumes your average daily schedule. All your friends are across state lines, so that leaves a lot of time for introspection. You play the Sims, binge watch TV if you are like me and have no WiFi for Netflix at home and rediscover old interests and maybe even new ones to pass the time.
If asked what the best part of summer vacation is, a lot of students will probably agree on this one: sleep.
Your sleeping schedule may be damaged beyond repair, but that's okay! This is the perfect time of year to either try to fix it before the fall or at least be able to accommodate it in its current state.
If you're an animal lover who has had to leave a beloved pet or pets at home due to the totally unreasonable rules of campus housing, you get to see your fur babies again!
You play, fuss at each other in sarcastically imitated barks and meows, take naps and basically fall back into your old routine as if you never left. They may initially not understand your sudden departure and return, but they soon go back to normal.
These are just a few of the things this summer has brought so far. We still have a long way to go until August, so have fun, be safe and make the best of it!
