I watched "Suicide Squad" on August 4th and have been confused ever since. I have so many questions that go without answering, and will probably never be acted upon. Why is Amanda Waller so badass? Why is every single character so underdeveloped? Why did they let 12-year-olds with “Musical.ly” on their resume edit this? All this and more will be criticized in my review of "Suicide Squad.”
Warning: This movie review may mention the movie. Spoilers ahead.
The premise of "Suicide Squad" was already kind of weak in all the trailers. There was no obvious plot line other than, “Make the bad guys do something good” and further stress on the word bad. The movie wasn’t much different. I can for sure tell you there was a bad guy who was supposed to be a good guy. The plot line was lost to me as soon as the odd editing cut in with everyone’s origin stories.
Speaking of origin stories, let’s start with Harley’s and why they didn't completely ruin it. Dr. Harleen Quinzal’s original origin story is all about how she slowly goes mad while falling in love with the Joker and chooses to become a villain for him. The Joker is manipulating her and the entire relationship is not #Goals at all. It is a blatantly abusive relationship that Harley slowly chose to be in, making her more human and not like some lost hero who the joker magically turned into a girlfriend. The difference is that Harley still has agency throughout it. The newer origin story was where the Joker pushed Dr. Quinzal into the vat of chemicals that changed him and she turns into the magical girlfriend. She was strongly opposed to it and had no choice whatsoever. In the movie, Harley is still changed physically through the chemical vat but throughout the messy editing we see the process of her being manipulated and falling for the Joker. So instead of being pushed into the vat she does a trust fall.
Onto the Joker. When the picture of Jared Leto as the joker was released I had a few problems.
Are those... grills? I mean what an edgy take on the Joker but were grills really necessary. I think even the joker understood that cultural appropriation is pretty messed up. I’m okay with everything else even though the green hair, purple glove and the wild look are the only things that the joker actually has.
Amanda Waller really came in clutch. She is by far the most powerful in my mind. With all the connections and dirt she has she can run the world. When someone had referred to her as god I nodded along like it was her actual name. Though she could be quite extra at times. Take for example when she shot every one of her supposed colleagues dead when leaving the fiery building. Or when she labeled the binder that was classified information, “Top Secret.” Other than those moments of extra-ness her badassery was admirable. Also, everything she did and said was straight forward so there was nothing the editing could do to confuse anyone there.
Overall the movie was poorly put together and could have been so much better if the plot was more defined and the characters a bit refined.
