MERRIMACK, NEW HAMPSHIRE - Ron Wilson was shocked when he came home from work to find his wife Gloria being understanding about the condition of their daughter Melanie's bedroom.
“Well, you see... Gloria usually does this thing where she goes completely ape-shit when Mel’s room isn’t perfectly clean. This could be anything from a sock on the floor, to the room looking like a hot LZ in ‘nam.” said the 48-year-old welder.
“I think Gloria might have really tapped into something here. I think she’s starting to understand that our daughter is approaching adulthood, and the stress of being a high school means Mel's priorities don't include cleaning her room. Frankly, Mel doesn’t care about anything anymore. When she’s not crying in her room watching Grey’s Anatomy, it’s almost like she doesn’t even live here,” he added.
“I just don’t see the big deal about a messy room. It’s not like it's her room,” said the 17-year-old. “I don’t enjoy living like this, it’s not amusing. I literally just don’t have the energy to clean. There are just bigger things to worry about, like the possibility of a True Detective season three, or ISIS. An unkempt room should be the least of my mom’s worries. She started this new thing where she stopped yelling at me like it’s some new fad to not yell at me. Like when she tried to go gluten free, or decided the family was going on a diet. She’s acting like it’s a big deal that she’s not freaking out anymore,” she whined, perched among her collection of empty Starbucks cups.
Gloria Wilson, age 42, sat in the kitchen sipping a cup of Earl Grey. “Melanie’s room used to be atrocious... you couldn’t even walk in there. From what I can remember, my room was never that filthy. It’s almost like Melanie thinks when we have guests over, I won’t bring them to her room. Her room should be clean 24/7, but I read somewhere that yelling at your child stresses them out. I didn’t like being yelled at so I decided to enact a sort of laissez-faire room cleaning policy. I believe a clean home is a happy home, but I’ve decided to dial it back. I’m praying this is just a phase. I’m sure when she’s in college and comes home for break, she’ll take much better care of her room. That’s my dream right there.”
A few weeks later, a recap with Gloria and Ron revealed their daughter’s room cleaning habits hadn't changed in the slightest - however, she is now more likely to eat dinner with her family rather than skipping dinner and locking herself in her room.
