Studying abroad has always been on my list of things to do during college.
Unfortunately, with so many terrorist attacks in Europe lately, many college students are afraid to live and learn in a different country. I, thankfully, am not.
I do not want to talk about political views too much, but I need to bring up something that many global citizens forget. Terrorists want us to react like this. They want us to be scared of going to new places and exploring areas of the world once deemed as "safe." They want us to live in fear. While any college student traveling abroad should be conscious of their surroundings and happenings in their host countries, we should not be petrified to do what we have been waiting for a long time to do—that is, study abroad.
As of this moment, I still have another two semesters to get through before I take a plane over to the European continent. I am torn between three different universities to study at: Franklin University in Lugano, Switzerland, Richmond University in London, England and the University of Reading in Reading, England.
Some people might be concerned that I am interested in studying in London, a high-target city for future attacks. I went there for a few days last summer, and I felt safe being there as an American citizen. Obviously, things have changed since summer of 2015, but my views still stand.
I hope that every student in college who wants to study abroad will continue to do so. Living a life in fear is not a life worth living. Just be aware of your environment and keep up with current affairs. Leave the rest to fate. Good luck on any future academic endeavors!
Stay gold.
