Top 11 Studio Ghibli Movies

If you are a movie fanatic, then you've probably heard of Studio Ghibli. These animated films largely made by Hayao Miyazaki have been called the Disney of Japan, and they are often put on lists with some of the best movies ever made. Here's a list of my favorites.

1. "Kiki's Delivery Service"

This is one of the earlier movies in the series, but it easily makes the number one spot on the list. Famous for having no antagonist, this movie transports you to a world of adventure, where anything seems possible.

2. "Spirited Away"

Also earning a high spot on the list, this is Studio Ghibli's most famous movie and is beautiful animated. It's also guaranteed to trip you out.

3. "Princess Mononoke"

An eclectic third, this is debatably one of the studio's best films and tackles hardcore ideas of environmentalism. If you like in-your-face symbolism and the environment, this is a must watch.

4. "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind"

Massive bugs, castles, robotic giants, toxic spores and a warrior princess. What's not to love?

5. "Ponyo"

Ponyo is an onomatopoeia for "soft squishy softness" in Japanese, which characterizes the tone of this movie perfectly. If you're tired of Disney's kids movies this will be a breath of fresh air.

6. "Grave of the Fireflies"

A strikingly different tone than Ponyo, "Grave of the Fireflies" is Studio Ghibli's most mature film and deals with tough issues related to war and death. It also packs a powerful emotional punch.

7. "Howl's Moving Castle"

This seems to be gaining momentum in the United States and is one of the most popular Studio Ghibli films. It is a rich film with a giant walking house, magic and beautiful scenery.

8. "Porco Rosso"

Hotels at sea, pirates, water planes and a pig man with a WW2 backdrop characterize this movie. It has a film noir feel and is a fascinating twist on a wartime drama for kids.

9. "My Neighbor Totoro"

I once bought a friend socks with Totoro printed on them. That is this film's effect on the world. This creature is one of Japan's most recognizable faces, and this movie deserves a watch just for that.

10. "Castle in the Sky"

In the lines of Princess Mononoke, "Castle in the Sky" is a great adventure film that explores issues of environmentalism. It doesn't occupy a higher list because it gets a little boring in some parts.

11. "The Cat Returns"

One could say Studio Ghibli was still perfecting their art when this movie was made, but it still earns a place on this list because of the innovative ideas it presents. Who wouldn't want to explore a world of hyper-intelligent cats?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
