To those of us who try to do everything while in school, I salute you. I've become very involved on campus in my year and a half here and I love it. Do I get overwhelmed? Oh heck yeah, but it makes going to school worth while.
When I first realized I was going to attend a commuter school, I was told by everyone to get involved on campus. My parents, school counselor, the new student orientation leader. Everyone. So my best friend on my dorm's floor and I decided we’d try to get into Associated Students Productions. We started volunteering in October and stuck with it. She even got promoted to a paid position! Goals, right there.
Halfway through my freshman year I decided to apply to be a resident adviser in the dorms. And you know what? I got in! So I added that to my resume too. This year I get to put on programs and fun events and take care of freshmen when they’re freaking out about their first year of college.
In the beginning of this year another friend of mine convinced me to rush a sorority. I wasn’t too sure about this but went through it anyway. I fell in love with the girls of Alpha Xi Delta and started going to all the events. Intramural games? I’ll be there. Philanthropies? Always a fun time for a great cause. Date parties and formal? Wouldn’t miss it. Monday meetings? Yeah, well I have to go to those.
This year has been hectic. I barely have free time with the extracurricular things and maintaining As in my 16 units of class. I only went home for Christmas break (I had RA work over Thanksgiving). I hardly see my best friends from last year. And sometimes I just want to nap all day but I have meetings and events and a test to study for.
This isn’t a complaint though. I couldn’t be happier. When I came home for Christmas my best friend from growing up said she’s never seen me happier than the pictures I’ve posted this year. I’ve made the best friends from my sorority. I’ve grown through Associated Students. I’ve learned a lot of responsibility from being an RA.
Joining something you love makes going to school so much easier. I can't even imagine if I only went to campus for class. I'd hate the school. Especially after leaving Econ. So to those who want to get involved, I say go for it. Learn to prioritize, but go for it. Even if it’s starting a club of your own. This has been the craziest and the most fun I’ve had in a semester.
