Over the past week, I gave a survey to 100 people ages 15-22 about their opinions on school, stress, and needed improvements! As you read, you will begin to see school through your children's, peers', or students' eyes! The survey consisted of 8 questions including the following:

What type of school do you go to?

Public: 87%

Private: 12%

Homeschooled: 1%

What is your favorite school subject?

English: 36%

Math: 22%

Science: 18%

Other: 24%

How many hours of sleep do you get on a school night?

7 hours: 55%

5 hours: 33%

8 hours or more: 9%

less than 3 hours: 3%

Do you enjoy going to school?

Yes: 51%

No: 49%

How many hours a night do you spend on homework?

2 hours: 33&

3 hours: 26%

30 minutes: 16%

1 hour: 15%

4 or more hours: 9%

Do you work hard for yourself or for others' approval?

Myself!: 59%

Others Approval: 41%

If you could change anything about your school's environment, what would it be?

"Give kids an hour during the day to do homework and ask their teachers questions like a study hall. Also make school more spirited!"

"Lower the impossibly high expectations"

"The fact that it is so structured down to every minute, no freedom or room for individuality"

"More classes that would be avalible to more students, classes fill up too quickly"

"The emphasis on grades. The anxiety created from earning a certain grade point overwhelms teenagers. Learning should be the main focus"

"The teachers"

"The negativity from the staff"

"Start classes later, we get no sleep"

"Making teachers communicate more- ensuring they don't all schedule tests the same exact day"

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
