A Letter To The Struggling College Student

Hey there friend,

I want you to know that you're not alone. College is such a difficult time and wow, it just really sucks some days. You, my friend, are not alone.

It's only September but I'm sure you're already stressed, sleep deprived, struggling in classes, running out of money, and running out of time. I want you to know that it's OK, and I love you. It's okay to be stressed already, it's okay that you're struggling because this is no joke. It doesn't matter what your major is, college is no joke.

Remember a few things, friend, remember to breathe. I know this sucks, I know that test you just took, took everything out of you. I know that your lab sucks, student teaching is long and hard, and staying up doing accounting homework until 3 a.m. because those numbers just don't make sense is a-w-f-u-l. But remember, things will get better! They will! Breathe in, breathe out.

Next thing to remember: take some time off. I know, what the heck? Time off? Isn't that the opposite of what I'm supposed to do? Nope, I meant what I said friends. There are times where you've been working on so many things for hours and hours on end and you just can't do it anymore. When you reach your wit's end and you just can't read one more word, put the book down. Make yourself some tea with honey, turn on some "Gilmore Girls" or "Grey's Anatomy." Lay down and relax. Take care of yourself.

Everyone struggles in college, and all for different reasons. Don't forget that you're only in college once! This is supposed to be fun, this is supposed to be one of the best times of your life, soak it in and have so much fun! Do what you need to do, get done what you need to get done and know that you are loved and not alone. We all have those days. You can do this! You got this! You are a superstar!

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
