If you're a theatre major, or even just do theatre as a hobby, these are some struggles you're bound to understand.
1. Tech Week
Ah yes, the feeling of endless exhaustion and stress. Hell week is everyone's nightmare. Tech people have to deal with cranky actors. Actors have to deal with cranky directors. No one is happy, everyone is hungry and the green room turns into a bedroom if you try hard enough.
2. First Dress VS. Final Dress
Both end with absolutely nothing going right. First dress feels like everyone is running around while everything is on fire. Wardrobe run crew wants to scream and actors only want to take pictures of themselves or sneak a few bites of food while in costume. Final dress usually involves the button rebellion and honestly, that's all I'm going to say.
3. Having your director as your professor
Deciding not to go to class during tech week so you can catch up on sleep or get a bite to eat is always awkward when you walk into rehearsal later in the day. Sometimes they'll ask, sometimes they wont...but either way they know, and either way you feel guilty.
4. Not landing a role
This is tough and anyone who has ever auditioned for anything knows how much of a let down this can be. That's why it's important to remember to keep going and not get discouraged, there are a plethora of reasons you didn't land that role and it doesn't necessarily involve your talent at all.
5. Keeping up
Being a theatre major in college doesn't exclude you from going to classes, getting good grades, eating, working, sleeping, exercising (if that's what you like to do), trying desperately to maintain a social life...but overall we can never really keep up with all of it. Something always falters behind, sometimes more than one thing and we never actually sleep but that's okay, because we're doing what we love! It's a lot of hard work, but to us, it's worth it!
